Who was Andrew Cunanan?

Andrew Cunanan is the serial killer who killed the famous fashion designer Gianni Versace. He was born in National City, CA, in 1969. He was known for being brilliant as a child and quite talkative until he became a teenager. He soon transformed into a compulsive liar who used to tell far-off and fantastical stories of his family and his own life. In 1988, Cunanan's mother found out that he was gay and got into a physical fight with him. He hurt her badly and had little empathy for her. That itself was a warning sign of his antisocial personality disorder. Cunanan graduated from High School in 1987 and later got enrolled at University of California San Diego. He soon dropped out of college and relocated to San Francisco. He got connected to the gay club there and often used to get associated with older and wealthy gay men. People just took him to be a social climber till then. Cunanan was mentally sick. He grew passion for serial killings. He began his killing spree a few months prior to killing Versace in Minneapolis in 1997. Cunanan murdered an acquaintance from San Diego after an argument, Jeffrey Trail. Cunanan's next victim was his ex-lover, David Madson. The police found him dead on the shores of Rush Lake in Minnesota. Cunanan soon earned a spot on FBI's Ten Most Wanted Criminals list. His third victim was real estate developer Lee Miglin. He stole Lee Miglin's car and drove to Pennsville to kill his fourth victim, William Reese by shooting him to death. Cunanan then went into hiding in Miami Beach for some time. He remained undetected by the authorities until he committed his last murder of fashion mogul Gianni Versace in 1997. Cunanan just shot him in front of his mansion and ran away. He then took his own life with the same shotgun he had used to kill Versace. He killed himself in houseboat bedroom a few days later on July 23, 1997. He had earlier met Versace at a night club in San Francisco in 1990 but there is no further information on their relationship. Nobody knew the motive behind his killings. Andrew Cunanan had left everyone in shock and hatred over his killings. There are some interesting findings about him: * Andrew Cunanan had an IQ of 147 and he was known as a prolific liar. He was considered to be highly clever for his age. He attended a school where all his other friends and school mates were wealthier than him and his family and so in order to fit in; he used to create fake identities for himself. People believed since then that he had an antisocial personality disorder. * When he was just 10 years old, he had memorized the encyclopedia. He was the only one of his four siblings to attend the prestigious and expensive private school. His brother, Christopher Cunanan said in an interview, "He was my father’s pride and joy,[He was] very smart. When he was about 10 years old, he had read the whole set of encyclopedias … and memorized it. And you could ask him any question. Pick up any edition and ask him any question, and he would tell you.” * His family found out he was gay when he was 19. By then he became a frequent nighttime patron at local gay bars and restaurants. He left home and moved to San Francisco to join the gay community. * When he joined the gay club, he took a lot of interest in creating violent pornography. * When the news of his killing spree spread, his friends and wealthy acquaintances fled the city to escape becoming his next victim. * Once his millionaire boyfriend had dumped him and that started his downward spiral. This millionaire boyfriend was Norman Blachford wo broke up with Cunanan in 1996. The managing director of America's most wanted at the time of Versace's murder, Donna Brant said, “He was dumped by his latest sugar daddy, He was losing his prowess among his peers. He had gotten sloppy and lost his looks, and the star was fading." * On David Madson's murder, Cunanan's former roomate Erik Greenman told in an interview, "[Andrew] loved David Madson very, very much.... [But after the breakup,] David didn’t want anything to do with him, I mean, David was Andrew’s life. He said many, many times that he would give up everything to move out to Minneapolis for David." Madson's body was found with gunshot wounds to the head and back on the east shore of Rush Lake near Rush City, Minnesota in 1997. * After killing Lee Miglin, Cunanan then drove Miglin's car to New Jersey, where he murdered yet another victim: William Reese, a cemetery worker, who appeared to have been shot to death so Cunanan could steal his 1995 red Chevrolet pickup truck. * Darren Criss stars as Cunanan in the American Crime Story series. This series has been written inspired from the life of Andrew Cunanan. Darren Criss looks quite identical to Cunanan and hence has been hired. "At the end of the day, if you think of the worst person that you know, that's done the worst things ever, you have more in common with them than not," Criss said of playing Cunanan in an interview. "The fact is, those differences are big, but they're small in number ... So, what's kind of been a joy for me is to find as many redeeming things as possible in someone that you fathom as something so horrible and to really get the audience to ask themselves, 'At what point could this have been me?" The role of Gianni Versace is played by Édgar Ramírez.
