Howie Long is a famous American National Football League, NFL, player, sports analyst and also an actor. He was born in Charlestown, Boston. Howie was born and brought up along with his siblings in a middle-class family. Long's father was a mill loader and his mother was a housewife. Long attended Milford High School and later went to Villanova University to pursue a degree in Communication. He has had quite an illustrious career. Long started his career in NFL with Oakland Raiders and remained at the top level for ten years. He gave excellent performance in four different teams and was eventually voted for the NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and also in the NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year. Howie Long retired from NFL and tried his luck in acting next. He was offered a role in films like 'Firestorm', 'Broken Arrow', 'That Thing You Do!', '300 Miles to Graceland' and many more. Football career

Howie Long is a member of the Milford Hall of Fame. He was an all-around athlete. He used to play football, basketball, shot put, javelin and even track. Howie Long has set state records in shot put and discus throw. After playing college football, he was a four-year letterman at Villanova and got selected to play in the Blue-Gray Football Classic. He was also named the MVP in 1980. Howie long moved to defensive end and earned All-East honors and honorable mention All-American by his senior year. Long was also Northern Collegiate Heavyweight boxing champion. Howie Long has played in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Oakland Riders. He played 13 seasons for the club wearing a number 75. His fearsome appearance on the football defensive end earned him eight Pro bowl selections. He said once in an interview in 1986, "Financial security, and I want to be in the Hall of Fame. That's my goal. And I'd like to win a few more Super Bowls." Howie Long was also the first team All-Pro three times. John Madden selected him to the All-Madden team in 1984 and 1985. He was also named the Seagrams' Seven Crown NFL Defensive Player of the year. The following year, Long was voted the Miller Lite NFL Defensive Lineman of the Year. He was a the football defensive end with the Raiders in the 1983 season, beating the Washington Redskins, as he outplayed the opposing offensive tackle, George Starke.

Life after football

Howie Long retired from NFL after the 1993 season and then tried his luck into acting. He wanted to appear mainly in action films. He has played the parts in action films like, 'Firestorm', 'Broken Arrow', '3000 Miles to Graceland' and 'That thing you do!'. In the movie, 'Broken Arrow', Long has appeared alongside John Travolta. In the movie, '3000 Miles to Graceland', Long played a minor role alongside Kevin Costner, Kurt Russel and Courtney Cox. Howie Long has also appeared in numerous TV shows and commercials. He was the spokesman for Radio Shack in which he made commercials with Teri Hatcher. Long has endorsed many brands and appeared in several commercials such as Coors Light, Nike, Campbell's Chunky Soup, Hanes, Frito Lay, Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Nabisco, Kraft, the Bud Bowl campaign, Honda and currently for Chevrolet. In an interview in 1986, Long said, "When I'm finished playing, I'd like to stay in touch with football, through broadcasting. I'm qualified to give a certain perspective and I'm articulate enough to handle it." Long also became a studio analyst for the Fox Network's NFL coverage. He also writes a column for Foxsports.com. Long also hosted an Annual Award show on Fox channel, 'Howie long's Tough Guys' which honored the NFL players whom he thought were the toughest. Long won a Sports Emmy Award in 1997 as "Outstanding Sports Personality/Analyst." Long has authored a book called, 'Football for Dummies' in order to help average fans to understand the basics of professional football. He was named Walter Camp Man of the Year in 2001 by the Walter Camp Foundation.

Chris Long, the son of Howie Long, is also an American football defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL.
