Who is Reg E. Cathey?

Reginald Eurias Cathey was born in February 2018. He was an American actor of stage, television, and films. Cathey was popularly known as Reg. He shot to fame with his roles as Norman Wilson in 'The Wire', as Martin Querns in 'Oz', Dr. Franklin Storm in the 2015 reboot of 'Fantastic Four', and Freddy Hayes in 'House of Cards'. He won three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for his work in 'House of Cards' for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. He also won an Emmy Award for the same in 2015. Cathey was born in Huntsville, Alabama to father Red Cathey, an Army Colonel. His father fought in three wars including World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His mother was a DOD worker and educator. Cathey also had a sister named Donza. Cathey spent his childhood on a rural farm with his family in West Germany before returning to Alabama when he was 14 years old. At the age of 9, his interest in theater grew after he attended a United Service Organization Show in West Germany. Cathey graduated from J. O. Johnson High School where he acted in plays such as 'To Kill A Mockingbird'. He also studied theater at the University of Michigan and at the Yale School of Drama. Cathey's death occurred at his home in New York City on February 9, 2018. He was 59 at the time of his death. He was battling lung cancer.

Initially, Cathey starred in the children's television show 'Square One'. He later did some guest roles in series' such as 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and 'Homicide: Life on the Street'. In 1994, Cathey appeared in 'The Mask'. His role was that of Freeze in 'The Mask', who was the antagonist's friend and bodyguard who gets killed by the title character. Reginald Cathey also appeared in 'Se7en' in 1995 in the role of the coroner. He then played the villain, Dirty Dee in the cult comedy movie, 'Pootie Tang'. He had a regular role on the HBO series 'The Wire'. His role in 'The Wire' as Norman Wilson came up during the fourth and fifth season. Cathey also worked with the creator of 'The Wire', David Simon on the Emmy Award-winning miniseries, 'The Corner'. Cathey played the role of a drug addict named Scalio in the miniseries. Cathey had a recurring role in the HBO prison drama, 'Oz' as the unit manager, Martin Querns. He played the role of Deetee in the film, 'Tank Girl'. Cathey also narrated 'Aftermath: Population Zero' which was a National Geographic Channel special which revolves around what Earth might be like if humanity no longer existed. He also played the homeless man Al, who was murdered by Patrick Bateman in the movie, 'American Psycho'. Cathey also narrated the TLC's 'Wonders of Weather' which was a TV series. On Between the Lions, he played King Ray in the story of "Rumpelstiltskin" in the episode, "Hay Day". Reg Cathey appeared in the documentary feature film, 'The People Speak' in 2009, which uses dramatic and musical performances of the letters, speeches of everyday Americans, diaries, based on historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. Cathey played the role of Ellis Boyd 'Red' Redding in 2009's theatrical production of 'The Shawshank Redemption' at the Wyndham's Theater in London. Cathey has also made two guest appearances on 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' as the undercover police officer who was involved in animal smuggling. He later appeared as a high-priced defense attorney to a hooker in the episode, 'Rhodium Nights' of the same series. He also made a guest appearance on 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' in its episode "Anti-Thesis" as a college professor who was suspected of murder. Cathey played boxing promoter Barry K. Word on the FX series 'Lights Out'. Cathey began a recurring role as the owner of Freddy's BBQ, Freddy Hayes, in the Netflix's original series, 'House of Cards' and also on 'Grim' in the role of Baron Samedi. His portrayal of Hayes in the second and third seasons of 'House of Cards' got him an Emmy nomination and a win for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Cathey also appeared in the American drama series, 'Outcast' which was aired in 2016. 'Outcast' was about a man who has been possessed by demons since he was young. His search for answers and redemption leads him into a relationship with Reverend Anderson, a West Virginia evangelist who believes he is fighting in a holy war against Earth's evil forces. Cathey had expressed a wish to appear in the Irish soap opera 'Fair City'. He co-starred in 'Fantastic Four' in 2015, 'The Invisible Woman' and 'The Human Torch'. Cathey's final television role will be portraying James Lucas in the Netflix series Marvel's Luke 'Cage'.
