Who is Emily V. Gordon?

Emily Vance Gordon was born in 1979. She is an American writer, podcast host and producer who shot to fame after co-writing the comedy movie, 'The Big Sick' along with her husband, Kumail Nanjiani. 'The Big Sick' was released in 2017 and it was a romantic comedy movie, based on her relationship with her husband who is also a frequent collaborator. Kuamil Nanjiani is a comedian. Gordon and Nanjiani are nominated for Oscar 2018 award for Best Original Screenplay for penning the movie, The Big Sick's script. Oscar 2018 will be held on March 4, 2018. Gordon began her career as a couples and family therapist before becoming a writer and comedy producer. The live show, 'The Meltdown' was co-created by her along with Johan and Nanjiani. 'The Meltodown' has been written for television for The Carmichael Show. She has also written a book called Super You and several online and print publications. Gordon was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She has earned her BA degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and also has a MS/Eds in couples and family counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Gordon has been married to comedian and actor Kuamil Nanjiani since 2007. This is Gordon's second marriage. She met Nanjiani at a comedy show in Chicago where he was performing. The two hit it off immediately and they wrote 'The Big Sick' together. In the later months, they began dating. During that period, Gordon had become severely sick and was put into a medically induced coma before she was diagnosed with the Stills' disease. After her recovery, three months later, they married. Their wedding was a Pakistani-American couple's wedding and in the movie, they show about the challenges faced due to the differences of cultures in the wedding. She moved to New York from Chicago. In 2010, Gordon and Nanjiani moved to Los Angeles.

Career

Emily V. Gordon's career can be divided into three segments: Counselling Career: Gordon practiced as a therapist from 2004 to 2009. She worked in North Carolina and later in Chicago, Illinois where she moved in 2005. She also worked in Brooklyn, New York where she moved in 2007. Writing and comedy: Her career in comedy began in New York. Here she worked at Comix Comedy Club and produced a live comedy show with Pete Holmes. Later, Gordon moved to Los Angeles in 2010 and there she pursued comedy and freelance writing full-time. As a teenager, Gordon had written two webseries which were aimed at teenagers, 'Power Up' and 'ExploreD' at Disney.com. Gordon also wrote for the second season of 'The Carmichael Show' on NBC where she wrote an episode called, 'New Neighbors'. Gordon is actively involved in writing comedy and producing it. In 2010, Gordon created a weekly live Show which was co-hosted by Jonah Ray and her husband Kumail Nanjiani called, 'The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail'; located in the back of comic bookstore Meltdown Comics; Gordon served as producer and booker. She acted as the program director in 2011 when Chris Hardwick decided to turn the space into a curated comedy venue. Gordon also served as the program director of the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics from the years 2011 to 2012. In 2013, she got her big break when Comedy Central ordered a pilot for 'The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail. This was later made into a series in 2014 of which Gordon was the executive producer. Gordon is a podcast host along with Nanjiani for Nerdist network show called 'The Indoor Kids', which "isn’t just about video games, but it isn’t not about video games." The podcast host is currently signed to adapt Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney's 2016 novel, 'The Nest for Amazon's film studio' and the feature film will be produced by Jill Soloway and Andrea Sperling. Super You: Gordon has also authored a book and her first book, 'Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero', a tongue-in-cheek self-improvement guide, was released in 2015. The Big Sick: Gordon co-wrote the screenplay of the 2017 comedy film, 'The Big Sick' along with her husband, kuamil Nanjiani. She also was the co-executive producer of the film. The film was critically acclaimed and it was based on the beginning of their relationship with each other. Nanjiani plays himself in the film and Gordon played the role of Zoe Kazan. The film was directed by Michael Showalter and it was produced by Judd Apatow. The script of 'The Big Sick' is nominated for screenwriting awards from the Writers Guild of America, the Gotham Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards and a dozen Critic's associations.
