Who is Mikael Kingsbury?

Mikaël Kingsbury was born in 1992 to parents Julie and Robert Kingsbury. He has one brother, Maxime and one sister, Audrey. He started freestyle skiing at the age of four and when he was just eight he joined a freestyle ski club in Mont Saint-Sauveu. His family has always supported him in his sport as a Canadian freestyle skier and let's just say he's one of the most celebrated mogul skiers in the world. He garnered acclaim quite early in his career by earning the 2009–10 FIS World Cup Rookie of the Year award. He is a six-time reigning FIS Freestyle World Cup title holder for both overall freestyle skiing and men's moguls. Kingsbury owns the records for most men's Moguls World Cup titles and Overall Freestyle World Cup titles. He is the first man who has won both the moguls and dual moguls World Championship events, and has won the most number of medals at the Freestyle World Championships of any competitor in history. He brought home the Olympic silver medal in 2014, and, at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, he won the gold medal as Olympic champion of men's moguls. Mikael enjoys playing hockey and golf, as well as surfing and skateboarding when he's not competing on the slopes. He is also studying human sciences at Cégep University by distance. Mikael believes in a strange superstition so he always wears the same brand of boxers in every competition and he has a t-shirt that has become his lucky shirt which reads “It’s good to be the king." He has worn it since reaching his first World Cup Podium in 2010. His favorite motto is 'Impossible is nothing'.

Career of the skier

Mikael Kingsbury got success quite early in his career. He shot to fame in 2010 when he won 4 moguls and 1 dual mogul event. Same year, he got two consecutive 4th place finishes on the World Cup Circuit. Owing to all these efforts, he was named 2009-10 FIS World Cup Rookie of the year. Kingsbury claimed his first World Cup podium in the first moguls event of his first full World Cup season, then later he got his first World Cup win on December of 2010. With the victory, he became the first 18-year-old to win a FIS Freestyle World Cup event. Kingsbury won six consecutive World Cup events in the beginning of the 2011-2012 season and he became only the second man to stand on the podium at every FIS freestyle competition in a season, with eight golds, four silvers, and a bronze medal. He thereby won his first FIS Freestyle Crystal Globe for moguls, as well as the overall Crystal Globe for all freestyle events. He managed to become the youngest male mogul skier to win a Crystal Globe, and set a record for the most podiums in a season. He received six victories in the 2012-13 season, including one 2nd-place and two 3rd-place finishes for a total of 9 podiums in 12 events. His performance one him both his second FIS title in moguls, along with his second consecutive overall Crystal Globe. At the 2013 FIS Frestyle World Ski Championships, Kingsbury won his first World Championship title in the moguls event after he also qualified for first. After that he competed in the dual moguls finals where he would find himself in the final match-up against teammate Bilodeau again. He again failed to beat him, getting a silver medal and completing a second double medal World Championships. During the 2013-14 season, Mikael began the season with 3 consecutive victories but could not win against his competitor, Bilodeau. At the Sochi Olympics, Kingsbury had a small stumble in his final run to finish with 24.71, finishing second to Bilodeau's 26.31, and collecting his first Olympic silver medal. Based on his World Cup results he was a gold medal surefire candidate but Kingsbury was surpassed by Bilodeau who surprised again for gold. When Kingsbury was just 21, he defeated Bilodeau in the final for his 21st career win. In the final event of the season, he led Bilodeau by 3 points in the Men's overall freestyle title, and by 31 points for the Men's mogul's title. In the final event, the two once again faced off in the dual moguls final. Bilodeau retired with a win over Kingsbury. He has continuously won a gold medal since 2011-2012 season to 2016-2017 in Men's Moguls in the World Cup. He has achieved a total of 47 victories in the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup. During the 2016-17 season, Kingsbury became the first freestyle skier to sweep the single and dual moguls competitions in Deer Valley for a second time. In the dual moguls, he beat his opponents by a combined score of 144-31 to get his 58th men's World Cup podium, surpassing Edgar Grospiron. In January 2018, Kingsbury made a new record for most world cup wins, surpassing Hannah Kearney of the USA at 47.
