Who is Jiayu Liu?

Liu Jiayu was born in 1992 in Hegang, China and she just so happens to be a snowboard champion. In fact, she specializes in half-pipe. In 2009 she won six World Cups and a half-pipe victory at the FIS Snowboarding World Championship. She started snowboarding in 2003 after dropping out of martial arts at the relatively late age of 11. Jiayu competed for China at the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Winter Olympic Games, achieving 4th, 9th, and 2nd place respectively. She won a silver medal in half-pipe in February at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Liu is originally from Hegang, but later moved to Harbin for winter-sports training. She is fondly called Birdie by her parents and friends. Some even call her the Rolling Kid because of her fondness for snowboarding. She loves to indulge in good food, playing games and listening to music in her spare time. She earned her education from the Beijing Sport University , People's Republic of China and she can speak English and Mandarin fluently. Jiayu trained in the Club Harbin in China under coach Timo Pekka Koskela who is from Finland. She made her World Cup Debut in 2007 in Calgary, Canada. She injured her shoulder at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and has undergone three operations on that shoulder. Jiayu She initially began alpine skiing in 2003 in Harbin, People's Republic of China, before switching to snowboarding in 2005 because she and her family liked the sport. She regards winning gold at the FIS Snowboarding World Championships 2009 in Gangwon, Republic of Korea as a her memorable achievement. She considers Coach Liu Changfu as her influence. Liu Jiayu became the first Chinese snowboarder to win a World Cup snowboard event when she won the 2008 event in Sungwoo, Republic of Korea, at 15 years and 152 days of age This victory also made her the youngest female snowboarder from any nation to win a World Cup snowboard event. She also became the first, and youngest, Chinese snowboarder to win a world championship event, when she claimed gold in the half-pipe event at the FIS Snowboarding World Championships 2009 in Gangwon, Republic of Korea at age 16 years and 128 days of age. During this time, this victory also made her the youngest female snowboarder from any nation to win a world championship title, until Japan's Miyabi Onitsuka beat her by winning gold in slope style at age 16 years and 101 days in 2015.
