Nancy Pelosi is a politician, the first female Democratic leader of the United States House of Representatives and she became the first female speaker of the House. She represents California’s 12th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Pelosi was born on 26th March 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland. She has ensured that her family’s custom of being part of politics has been kept alive. She currently lives in Pacific Heights, San Francisco.

Pelosi’s Early Life and Education

Pelosi’s birth name is Nancy Patricia D’Alessandro. Her parents’ names are Thomas D’Alessandro and Annunciata Lombardi D’Alessandro. She was the only daughter and last born of six children. They lived in Little Italy on Albemarle Street. She comes from a family that was involved in politics and was known as the mayor’s daughter when she was young. Her father was in Congress for five terms and he was the mayor of Baltimore for 12 years. Her brother, Thomas D’Alessandro the third was also mayor of Baltimore. Pelosi often worked on her father’s campaign together with her brothers. Pelosi’s parents were strict Roman Catholics and hence she attended an only girls school in Baltimore called the Institute of Note Dame High School. When it was time for her to go to college, her parents allowed her to go as far as Washington D.C, which was not that far from Baltimore. She attended Trinity College, which was a Roman Catholic College for women only. She graduated in 1962 and became a congressional intern for a Maryland senator. Pelosi later got married to Paul Pelosi who was a graduate of Georgetown University and who came from San Francisco. The couple later moved to New York City where her husband Paul Pelosi worked as a banker. In 1969, they moved to San Francisco where they had five children namely: Christine, Paul, Nancy Corinne, Alexandra, and Jacqueline. Pelosi devoted her life to her family for a number of years before getting into politics. She was slowly pulled into politics when she started volunteering for the Democratic Party. She later climbed the party ranks and served as California representative to the Democratic National Committee from 1976 to 1996. Pelosi also worked as the state and northern chair of the California Democratic Party.

Nancy’s Career as a Politician

In 1987, Pelosi joined the public office when she won the special election for California’s Eighth District. Since she was a member of the United States House of Representatives, she also served on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Appropriations Committee. Pelosi has always supported the increase of funds for housing programs and initiatives, health care and health research. Pelosi is a huge advocate for the environment and human rights. This has made her one of the leading Democrats in Congress. In 2002, Pelosi made history when she was the first woman to become the Democratic leader of the House of Representatives. In 2006, she again made history when she became the first woman to be the Speaker of the House. Pelosi was known to be contentious despite being ruled by a Republican president. She was against President George W. Bush’s stand of declaring war in Iraq. She lobbied for the withdrawal of United States army from Iraq. In 2009, Pelosi found herself in trouble when the CIA claimed that they had notified her of one of their torture techniques for terrorists known as waterboarding. She had been against this technique and strongly denied the claims. Pelosi advocated for access to college education, affordable health care, and development of better-paying jobs. She also revised the energy policy and made it focus on efficient and cleaner domestic options. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected president and Pelosi had the opportunity to work with a democrat president. She was able to drive the health care reform legislation until it became the Affordable Care Act that was commonly known as Obama care in 2010. This made Pelosi get more criticism, which she ignored. In 2010, Pelosi lost her seat as House speaker to John Boehner when the Republicans took over the House. She was elected to be the minority leader. In 2013, Pelosi was chosen to represent California’s 12th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. She received challenges and criticisms regarding her leadership. In 2016, Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan tried to replace Pelosi as the minority leader but this attempt was unsuccessful. On January 18, 2018, it was announced that Pelosi would be a guest judge at RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars. When she was interviewed after appearing on Drag Race All-Stars, she said that politicians should learn to be real from drag queens. On February 7, 2018, Instagram and Twitter were lit with comments when Pelosi made the record of delivering the longest speech on the House floor. Pelosi was protesting against the legislation that failed to protect children of immigrants who are undocumented. She took advantage of the “magic-minute rule” which gives House leaders the chance to talk for a long time and recited passages from the Bible. Democratic senators congratulated Pelosi on Twitter and Instagram for her long speech.
