Who is Marc Bischofberger?

Marc Bischofberger is a Swiss Freestyle skier who was born in 1991. He currently competes in ski cross discipline. Marc Bischofberger is nicknamed as Bischi by his friends and he loves snow kiting and kite surfing in his spare time. He is also a mechanic who can speak both English and German and his partner is Isabella. He trained under coach Ralph Pfaffli who is a national level coach. His aunt Annemarie Bischofberger competed in alpine skiing at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY, though the younger Bischofberger didn't make his World Cup Debut until 2013 in Are, Sweden. He has had problems with his knee during his career, including an anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] and meniscus injury that kept him out of action for one year. He began freestyle skiing at age 21 in 2012. He chose the sport because, "I saw a flyer and thought I have to do this. I signed up for my first race and it was awesome." His most memorable achievement was winning two races at the 2017 World Cup event in Innichen, Italy. He regards the Swiss Alpine skier Silvano Beltrametti as his hero though his parents are the biggest influence in his life. He trains with the philosophy,"Go fast." He said in his biography, "Since the age of two I am an enthusiastic ski racer. Until the season 09/10 I moved successfully in alpine ski racing, where I was forced to make shorter injuries. But this break only allowed me to discover my fascination with ski cross. Already in my second season, I made the jump into the B squad. Due to my positive development and my unrestrained ambition, I drive since the season 12/13 World Cup and was rewarded the following year even with the inclusion in the A-squad. My coaches were not disappointed with this decision - in 2015 I celebrated my first World Cup victory, secured my position as the best Swiss in the Ski Cross World Cup and finished the season as Swiss champion. Due to this successful season, I am now driving in the national team, in the highest Kaderstufe." He added, "Since 2017 I have been proficient in skicross sport and celebrated my greatest successes in the 2018/19 season, most notably winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Pyoengchang."

Recent stint at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

The men’s finale event in freestyle skiing took an interesting and gripping turn with the third-overall Kevin Drury (CAN) and second-overall Jean Frederic Chapuis (FRA) both determined to leave behind the front runner, Marc Bischofberger (SUI). Rumors suggested the Bischofberger was unlikely to do any more than pull out of the gate and purposely DNF to gain a precious few points and then pray that his competitors wouldn’t be able to capitalize upon it. The match took a totally disbelievingly different turn. Bischi finished the season with 462 points to claim Switzerland’s first ski cross globe in almost half a decade, with his Olympic silver medal earned at the PyeongChang Games. “It’s an amazing feeling,” said Bischofberger, smiling broadly, “After the Olympics it was already great, but now with the globe it’s a perfect season for me. I couldn’t imagine this when I started this season. My goal was to be in the top-10, and now I’m the winner of the overall. “I’m so thankful for my team. Everybody does a great job and it’s really fun to ski with these guys. You can see with say the Norwegian team in Alpine how important a good team is, and our team works so well together. It’s a pleasure to ski with them. “It’s not so cool that we couldn’t have the race today and that Freddy (Chapuis) and Drury couldn’t go for the win, but that’s the way it goes sometimes and it’s good that the right decision was made for safety.”
