Also a starter on the basketball team, Johnson was titled as the second-team all-conference as a junior. Johnson was committed to the University of Northern Iowa to play college football. Johnson studied at the Northern Iowa from 2010 to 2014. During his senior season too, he set numerous school records, including career rushing yards, career rushing touchdowns, and career all-purpose yards.

"She's the one who's telling me I had a fumble or I missed some catches, and she's learning. That's what happens. She started learning and so now she's able to talk to me about the plays that I messed up on." But he also added that his wife was his biggest critique as well as biggest supporter. "She'll praise me," David said. "She's my biggest supporter and she'll praise me, but she knows me. I'm always trying to see what I messed up on and she'll let me know." Johnson has definitely played upto the hopes and expectations of his wife, his fans and himself. Johnson became the first player in NFL history to have at least 100 yards from scrimmage in the first 15 games of a season.
