What is the purpose of body wash?
This may sound like silly, but yes there is more to body wash than simply washing off dirt and sweat! Instead of using the bar of soap, there are so many other options for body wash that won't just clean, but also soothe and can be calming due to its scent.
Unlike body washes, brands like Dove bar soap, market that their soap is mainly moisturizing for the skin. This may appear to be true at first for Dove and other brands, but ultimately the soaps just clog skin pores and contain little beneficial healing qualities for your skin. Dove soap is just one example. Instead of purchasing a cheap soap for your skin care routine like Dove it is great for your skin if you spend the time making your own body wash from scratch.
Now, that is not to say that all bar soaps are bad. There are truly amazing bar soaps on the market, but if you have the option to choose your own ingredients and make a body wash from scratch it "can" be better than some of the other options.
Body wash is meant to be hydrating. While it hydrates the skin and can soothe it as well, it is also important to remember to hydrate afterwards. Hydrating your skin after using a body wash with a lotion or oil locks in the hydrating properties you got from the body wash in the shower.
In addition, body wash is wonderful because of how many different types of body wash recipes you can make and try out! You can add different essential oils, which we will touch on later, and swap out ingredients for ones that best benefit your skin! There are numerous possibilities to personalize this homemade body wash recipe. Before you know it you will have made your very own homemade body wash to soothe, cleanse and hydrate your skin!

2/3 cup of liquid Castile soap- you can choose your scent preference.
1/2 cup of coconut milk- best to use an unsweetened and canned coconut milk
2 tsps. vitamin E oil
3-5 drops of your own choice of essential oils
1 tsp. honey
1.5 tsps. coconut oil
*optional* add glycerin to your homemade body wash recipe instead of the coconut oil if you prefer. You may also keep the coconut oil and just add the glycerin into the body wash as well.
Steps to make your homemade body wash
Before making this amazingly nourishing body wash recipe, keep in mind that because of the use of coconut milk it should be kept in the fridge and used up in a week. If you do not foresee using the entire batch in a week you can always freeze smaller amounts of the body wash into ice cube trays. Then you can just pop one body wash cube out when you are ready. If you prefer not to freeze smaller batches you can simply halve the recipe.
1. Measure out the right amounts of coconut milk and Castile soap.
2. Add these two ingredients in a jar of some sort that you would like to store your homemade body wash in.
3. Measure out the remainder of the ingredients and add them to your coconut milk and Castile soap.
*Keep in mind that the honey will thicken the soap. If you feel it needs to thicken up a bit, just add an extra 1/2 tsp. of honey.
4. Shake the body wash until it is combined.
* If you would like to add the vegetable glycerin, simply replace the coconut oil with the glycerin, or you can keep both! If you decide to use glycerin, this can also thicken the body wash. In order for it to not thicken too much, add the honey first and then the glycerin in the amount you would have used for coconut oil and add more if needed.
