What to Know Before Dying Your Own Hair

You should be conversant with certain things before you undertake the process of dying your own hair.

1. Know Your Natural Hair Color

The most important thing you should do is to know the natural color of your hair before you dye it yourself. Get to know if it is black, blonde, or brown. That way, you will be able to know where to start when you want to choose the shade of the color you want to dye. For example, someone who is a natural blonde can easily dye to a different color like silver, burgundy, purple, red, blue, or brown than a person whose hair is a darker shade. If you are not certain about your natural hair color, consult with your hair stylist.

2. Be Practical

You should know that changing the color of your hair is a long process that takes time. Do not expect to dye your hair color to a drastic hair color like silver, blue, red, burgundy, and purple and expect immediate results. Instead, the results you get will be a huge disappointment. Whenever you want to dye your hair a bright color, you should first start from a slightly brighter color than your hair then go on changing the color of your hair until you get to the shade you want.

3. Buy More Than One Box of Dye

Whenever you want to dye your own hair, ensure that you have more than one box of dye. You do not want to be in the process of dying your hair then you run out of dye. You will not get the result you wanted with your hair. Therefore, buy more than one box and keep the rest for the next time you want to dye your hair.

4. Put on a Wig

If you plan to dye your hair a color that is three shades darker or lighter, then put on a wig that is close to the color you want to dye your hair. This way, you will be able to know if the color looks good on you or not. You will also be able to get feedback from your friends and family if the color is right for you.

5. Know the Right Formula

You should know the right dye to use on your hair in order to get the right results. Women who have sensitive skin should use foam dyes because it will not drip on the hairline or face. If you have curly or thick hair, you should use gel or liquid dye because it will distribute evenly in the hair and you get the results you want. If you are unsure about the type of dye to use on your hair type, consult a hair stylist and you will not be steered wrong.

6. Avoid the Pool

You should know that swimming pool water is not good for your hair. Whenever you go swimming, the chlorine in the water gets rid of the hair cuticle, which enables the minerals in the water to get access to the hair shaft and it changes the color of your hair. Therefore, you should avoid the swimming at all costs for a period of at least two weeks before and after you dye your hair.

7. Buy A Shade Lighter

When it comes to dyeing the hair, you should know that the color of the hair after you dye will be a shade darker than the one shown on the box. Therefore, always get a dye that is a shade lighter than the color you want. It will be easier for you to increase the color of your hair than it is to reduce it.

8. Avoid the Shower

Before you dye your hair, you should skip like a day of washing your hair. Research shows that the natural oil on your scalp works as a shield to prevent irritation when you apply your dye on the hair. Dirty hair is also easier to dye and section. The color of the dye will be distributed easily in the hair if it is dirty.

9. Change Your Shampoo

There are certain shampoos that are not good to use when you want to dye your hair. Shampoos like dandruff-fighting or clarifying formula are known to have chemicals and sulfates that are harsh to the hair and removes the hair color. If you have such a shampoo then change it and get a shampoo that is gentle and preserves the color you dye on the hair.

10. Be Ready For the Damage

You should know that hair gets damaged when you apply color to it even if you are getting back to your natural color like black, burgundy, blonde, red, and brown. Dyes whether semi-permanent or permanent have hydrogen peroxide, which alters the color of the hair pigment. It is recommended to use a mask when you are dyeing your hair at least once a week. The mask ensures that the hair that is damaged is repaired and it protects the hair from any more damage.

How to Dye Your Hair

Dyeing your hair at home on your own can be scary at first but when you have a process to follow, it is easy. Here are some steps you can follow to help you dye your own hair at home:

Step 1: wash your hair a day or two before you dye it. This will give the natural oils on your scalp time to form. The natural oils will help to protect your skin and allow the dye to blend together with the hair. When you wash your hair, ensure that you do not condition it because conditioners will prevent the natural oils from forming.

Step 2: pick a color that you like. There are many colors out there like silver, purple, red, burgundy, blue, brown, blonde, and black that can make you be confused when you are choosing a color for your hair. Therefore, if it is your first time dyeing your hair, you should get a hair dye that is two shades lighter or darker than the natural color of your hair. Also, use a semi-permanent hair dye if it is your first time. That way, you can change your hair color back if you do not like the result you get after dyeing.

Step 3: protect yourself from dye stains. When you are dyeing your hair on your own, you are bound to get dye stains on your clothes and the surrounding. Therefore, wear clothes that you are not afraid to put stains on. Also, put newspapers around the place you will be working on. That way, it will be easier for you to clean up after you are done dyeing your hair.

Step 4: put a towel on our shoulders. During the process of dyeing your hair, some dye is bound to drip off your hair. The towel will catch the dye that tends to escape from the hair. Ensure you keep the towel in place using a clip in front your neck and that the towel you use is dark so that it is not stained. You can also use a color cape that you can buy at a beauty store.

Step 5: brush your hair to remove tangles. This will make application of the dye easier and the dye will be evenly distributed in the hair.

Step 6: before applying dye on the hair, apply a coat of Vaseline on the neck, hairline, and ears. This ensures that you can easily remove the dye that gets on your skin when you are dyeing your hair.

Step 7: wear gloves. The gloves will always come with the dye kit or you can purchase one of your own. It is important for you to wear gloves when you are dyeing your hair to prevent your hands from being dyed as well.

Step 8: mix the dye. The hair dye kits always come with an instructions manual. Mix the dyes ingredients together as per the instructions. If you do not follow the instructions, you will not get the results you want.

Step 9: separate your hair into sections and use a clip to keep the sections apart. Sectioning the hair ensures that you do not miss a part of hair when you are dyeing.

Step 10: apply the dye to your sectioned hair. If it is your first time dyeing your hair, start to apply the dye an inch from the roots. If it is a just a touch-up, then apply the dye half an inch from the roots. Once you apply the dye, work the dye in your hair using your gloved hand.

Step 11: set a timer. Follow the instructions on the dye kit for how long the dye should stay in the hair. You should never let the dye in your hair to stay overnight because it will damage your hair and irritate your skin.

Step 12: rinse your hair. Once the time is up, wash the dye from your hair using warm water. Wash your hair thoroughly until the water runs clear.

Step 13: condition and shampoo your hair. Ensure that you shampoo and condition your hair an hour after you have rinsed it. The hour ensures that the dye is able to penetrate the hair.

Step 14: dry your hair and style it. You can dry your hair by either air-drying or blow-drying it. Then you can style your hair as you desire. Dyeing your own hair at home can be a process that you enjoy once you learn it. If you do not think the color is distributed evenly, you can always go to a hair stylist to help you out. Try out the process and you will be happily showing off your new hair color to your friends and family.
