15 Tips To Get A Spontaneous Chic Wavy Hair

The Essential 3Ps

As the title suggests, this blog is about how you can achieve cute, wavy curls that look natural in just a few fun minutes. An easy way to create those mermaid waves is to go to a salon, shell out some big bucks and time and then get those almost permanent waves. But what if you can get that same look for a tenth of the cost and time, and what if permanent waves is not your thing? Then here is just the thing for you. A crowdsourced pool of wavy hair ideas from the Web, offer you a range- from soft, sunny waves to tight, posh curls- you’ll be spoilt for choice by the end of this reading, I promise. If there’s anything you want to memorize from reading this blog, the 3Ps would be it!

Prepare, Prime, Preen- the 3Ps

Before you start working to create waves in your hair, you need to arm yourself with the awareness of some essentials that keep your hair safe, wavy and healthy. Remember to Prepare, Prime and then go on and Preen To prepare for and prime your hair for any heat treatment, remember to always use a heat protector that will guard your hair from the unnatural heat your are exposing your locks to. CHI Iron Guard does that job reliably. Use this at the beginning, to have our hair protected. Once this is done run a broad brush lightly through hair to undo any knots and get rid of any frizziness. Number 2, Add sheen to go preen. You will need to grab a ‘polish’ to add that sheen and finesse to your just born curls, so they look naturally wavy and ‘permanent’. For this you can use CHI Pliable Polish. This gives your hair that made-for-the-camera, glamorous sheen. Number 3, on this list of essentials is a volumizing spray that will hold your waves or even flyaways, giving your waves that natural beachy look. A popular favorite for this is the Big Sexy Spray and Stay. Finally 4, you definitely don’t want to forget the texturizing spray for that bombshell look, sure to make heads turn and eyes swoon! A promising texturizing spray is Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast. The texturizing spray helps add texture to your hair, and manages your waves so well; doesn’t matter if they came from a flat iron or air-dried braids. A poll revealed that hair sprayed with one or more of these products had better appeal for guys than did hair styles that didn’t use any of these sprays. (Fact check: Did I just make that up about the poll? Erm..Yep, a soft, wavy bout of my imagination. But it totally makes sense, in this context!) OK now, let’s plunge into the fun part with these 15 tips to get spontaneous, chic wavy hair.

1) Cute-Messy-Look Hair

A really easy-peasy way to get those flouncy, beach waves is by using a curling wand. The ‘Bed Head Curlipops Curling Wand’, will be 18 bucks well spent (in US dollars), to get that breezy look.

What you need

You will need a curling wand with a barrel that is at least 1” wide. A good curling wand will work its magic to make soft waves in your hair, in no time.

What you should do

Tie up your hair in a high ponytail, getting as much hair into your ponytail as possible, this would be the part of your hair that would get curled. This method ensures that your waves start at about shoulder’s length, and then cascade downward through the length of your hair.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

Get the wand at the base of your ponytail and hold the barrel horizontal to the floor, pointing downwards. Starting at the base of your ponytail, extract about an inch worth of hair strands to wrap or twine around the barrel of your wand. The wrapping should be slightly diagonally angled for a softer look, and should be in the direction that is away from your face. In this case, the barrel will be placed right about behind of the strand of hair that you are about to curl, that way you make sure that you are curling your hair away from your face. Do this for all strands of your hair, making sure you are moving in one direction (away from your face) and twining your hair diagonally to keep that soft look. Once this is done, undo your ponytail and lightly run your fingers through your hair. You can use a texturizing and/or volumizing spray to add volume and texture. Warning: this hairstyle calls for a lot of attention from girls and guys alike! Be ready to be the center of attraction wherever you go.

And if you’re like me

You will keep use an all-natural hair protector. It’s so simple and fun to make. You will need a tablespoon of pure Aloe vera gel (I prefer using it straight from the leaf, as opposed to store bought gels), 3 tablespoons of water and one capsule of Vitamin E. Get these ingredients together in a bowl, give it a good mix and voila, use this as a heat protector and you’re all set to start ‘waving’ straight hair goodbye.

2) No Heat-No Cheat-Lazy Waves Hair

This one’s is my go-to hairdo when I don’t have much time (which is like almost always!)

What you need

A bunch of hair elastic bands to hold your hair in bunches and a broad brush.

What you should do

Dampen your hair with a little water, and a marble sized portion of hair conditioner. Make sure you don’t rub the conditioner into your roots. Divide up your hair into four sections or quarters. Then on one side at the top of your head use about one quarter of your hair to bunch up tightly. Use an elastic to hold this tightly together. Do the same on the other quarters too.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

The fun part starts now (if it hasn't already). Twist each bunch anti-clockwise tightly. Without letting go of the tension in the twist, start making a tight bun. Use an elastic band to hold the bun together. Do this on all four bunched up strands. Let it air dry. Once your hair is completely dry. Gently take off the elastic bands and unfurl your curls. Run your fingers through. Finally, don’t forget to use your texturizing spray and scrunch your curls.

And if you’re like me

Plan in advance. While the process of bunching up your hair and twisting them into tight little buns is not time consuming. Air-drying takes time. I would normally, do this just before I get into bed, so that I wake up to the cutest, soft curls the next morning. I would most certainly dampen my hair with aloe water, to give it that natural sheen. I would use argan oil to separate out the curls, not a brush.

3) Flat Iron Waves Hair

This hair literally takes 5 minutes to shine through! You guys have to try this, if you desire that perfect cute girl-next-door look. Do this with your hair, and you’ll have guys come up to you with some really innovative pick up lines to grab your attention.

What you need

A couple bobby clips, a flat iron, large hair clips to hold sections of your hair.

What you should do

Dampen your hair with very little water and a heat protector. Part your hair right through the center. Use a clip to hold one side down, while working on the other.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

While working on one section of your hair, gently run your fingers through your hair to make sure there are no tangles. Twist this section of your hair tight till the ends and clip it down with a bobby clip. Use a flat iron to press against the twisted hair, keeping the iron pressed for a few seconds before moving to the next section. Repeat this on the other side. Once this is done, let your hair cool, and take off the bobby clips. Run your fingers through for a tousled look. This look is very understated, it gives your hair that natural and permanent, soft-waves look.

And if you’re like me

Since this hair style no time at all, I would wear my hair like this so frequently, that this soft, wavy, cute look would come close to being my permanent look!

4) Breezy Waves Hair

What you need

A flat iron and hair clips.

What you should do

Section out your hair into two- a top section above your ears and a bottom section. Use a large hair clip to hold the section of your hair on top.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

You will start with working on the section below. Grab 2-3 inches of your hair and wrap it around the flat iron away from your face. Point the flat iron downwards. Leave the ends of your hair. The idea is to warp or turn the hair into a curl or wave only once about 90 degrees in the direction away from your face, and then let go. Do this for all your hair, one section at a time. Remember that every single curl is going away from the face for this effortless, breezy look.

And if you’re like me

You will practice using the flat iron to make curls on your hair without turning the heat on, a few times before actually working on those waves.

5) Tight Curls and Wavy Hair

What you need

Flat iron, large hair clips, and some patience

What you should do

Prepare your hair and section out your hair into two; one section that goes above your ears and one that goes below. Bunch up the top section of your hair and use a clip to hold it up. Start with the bottom section.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

Take smaller strands from the bottom of your hair, and curl it around your wand all the way through, and then run the wand all through that strand. Do this for your entire hair. Run your fingers through your curls and create that beachy look.

And if you’re like me

you will practice this with your flat iron a few times without heat, before you actually turned on the heat, ‘coz this take practice and patience.

6) S-for Sexy, S- for Stylish: S Waves Hair

What you need

Flat iron and patience!

What you should do

You know the drill by now. Heat protector - Check; untangle your hair with your fingers - Check. Ok, now you’re good to go.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

Divide your hair into two sections; one above your ears and one below. Dividing your hair up into sections just makes it easier to handle (especially, if you’re like me and have a lion’s mane in lieu of hair.) Use small sections of your hair. With the flat iron facing down, start with the root, turn your flat iron 90 degrees upward, hold for a couple seconds. Release the clutch of your flat iron and then moving it along the strand gently grasp another portion of the strand firmly for a few seconds by twisting it in the opposite direction to 180 degrees. Continue this process till the tip of the hair bunch. Do this for the entire hair. Use a texturising spray to enhance and give your waves a permanent look.

7) Glamour-Queen-Waves Hair

What you need

Your flat iron.

What you should do

It’s best to divide your hair into manageable sections and prepare each section with a heat protector.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

These are tight curls that open out in different directions. That means, for the first section of hair that is closest to the face (near about your ears), the curls around the wand will be twisted away from the face. For the next section, the curls will be twisted toward the face. Go on like this till you complete curling all your hair in alternating directions. The alternating directions of curls or waves in your hair gives a little more texture and bounce to your hair.

And if you’re like me

You would use one pump of pure argan oil to gently run it through your hair tips to open them up after your are done curling your hair.

8) Unforgettable 60s Wavy Hair

Do you go by ‘old is gold’ at least once in a way? Yeah, me too! Doing your hair like Marilyn Monroe, for instance, is a great way add a retro-spin to your look.

What you need

Big clips to hold large sections of your hair, smaller bobby clips, flat iron

What you should do

Prepare your hair with heat protector and divide your hair up into two sections. Section the top of your hair from around your temples and clip it up. Start working with the bottom section (which is the rest of your hair).

Getting from straight to wavy hair

Here the curls go towards your face instead of away. Take a section of your hair starting just below your ears and straighten 2-3 inches. When you are about half way down, start flipping it toward your face right down to the end of the strand. Do this for a few sections on one side of your face. Now open up the top section of your hair and split that in half, and use one half to continue the same process for styling. With your flat iron facing down, use 2-3 inches of your hair around the wand to work it through toward your face. The curls will start on top of the head now, and will all go in the same direction, toward your face. Once the curls are set and cooled off, use a hair brush to lightly brush out the curls. This resembles the old glam Hollywood style, where your curls go towards your face and hugs your face.

9) Beachy Waves Hair

What you need

lots of bobby pins or hair elastic bands.

What you should do

Divide your hair into two sections; top section starting at the temples and the bottom section.

Getting from straight to wavy hair

Begin with the bottom section and make thin, tiny braids in your hair. The thinner the braids the better. I would make braids that are about a centimeter in thickness. Use bobby clips to hold each braid. Once you complete braiding the bottom section of your hair, open up the top section of your hair. The top section should have braids starting in the front and then going to the back. Use your flat iron to run it through each braid a couple times, and make sure each braid gets heated right through the end. Once each braid is pressed like a panini and cooled off, take the bobby pins out and take the braids apart.

The next 6 tips are a combination of the hair styles we’ve just seen. I got creative and tried these out a few times and they looked F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S!

10) Bring Back The 60s To The Beach- Hair

Show off that cuteness in style in 3 easy steps. 1) divide your hair up into two sections; one above your ears the other below that. 2) Braid the bottom section into several braids, and flat iron them for a few seconds each.3) On the top section, use the face hugging technique of the ‘Unforgettable 60s hair’. Open up those fabulous waves with your fingers to make heads turn.

11) Retro-Glam Hair

Divide your hair into two sections; one above your ears the other below that. Start with the bottom section and do the ‘Unforgettable 60s hair’ for this section. For the hair on top, use ‘glamour queen waves hair’. This hair-do will sure make guys flip.

12) Ms.Smart Messy Hair

Divide your hair into two sections; one above your ears the other below that. Start with the bottom section and straighten out this section, with a gentle curl in the tips towards your face. The top section should use a curling wand to make soft curly waves.

13) Braidsmaid Hair

Divide your hair into two sections; one above your ears the other below that. Start with the bottom section and make tight curls using a flat iron. On the top section make thin braids and flat iron them out. Let it cool and use your fingers to tousle your hair.

14) Wavy Posh Hair

Divide your hair into two sections one above your ears the other below that. Start with the bottom section and straighten the hair right to the tip. Divide the top section into two tiny ponytails and do the ‘No-heat, No-cheat Lazy waves hair’. This hairstyle gives you height and a slim look in the face.

15) Forevah Doll Hair

Use a flat iron and straighten your hair for the most part, save the last two inches. Curl the last two inches of your hair outward into a tight loop. You can also use a straight bang on one side to complement this baby doll look.

Go Have Fun

Each of these styles are fun to try out on your hair, not least because they are not boring at all when you are your own stylist, but also because each of these is worth being a showstopper hair style.
