What You Didn't Know About Javier Bardem And His Wife, Penelope Cruz

Javier Bardem, Wife Penelope Cruz: A Love Story

Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz first crossed paths in a small movie in 1992 called "Jamon Jamon." They didn't reconnect until 2007 and co-starred in the movie "Vicki Christina Barcelona." Sparks flew onscreen and off for Javier Bardem and his now wife, Penelope Cruz. And by the way, you could say that they arrived at the doorstep of their love, fully-formed. Both had survived multiple relationships and the expansion and contraction of the fame that comes with making movies. Meeting as EQUALS, they began a courtship in 2007 and that culminated in their quiet, low-key marriage in the Bahamas in 2010. Being married also brought new life in the form of a son, Leonardo, 6, born in 2010 and a daughter, Luna, 4, born in 2013.

“The biggest feelings I have ever experienced come from the way my children look at me. Being a mother is seeing life from a different point of view, as if you were a child again. Even your relationship with nature changes; it’s like you can see a tree through new eyes,”

Bardem And Cruz: The Couple That Almost Weren't

Even though No Country For Old Men actor Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz have been happily married since 2010; they almost didn't happen. Bardem was intimidated by Cruz wearing her emotions on her sleeve, both on and off the set. He saw that animal feistiness within her and almost thought it would be too much work. The complicated women that the universe spits out from time-to-time, come once in a lifetime. In fact, once in a generation, we are blessed with women who have a fusion of talent and ferocious honesty and who contribute to ART. Going backwards to now: Carole Lombard, Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Fonda, Faye Dunaway, Jessica Lange, Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman, Charlize Theron and Robin Wright. Penelope Cruz is right among them. Unique. A breathtaking beauty, that is only rivaled by her instinctive talent. A talent that is ENTIRELY connected to her fire. Javier saw this. And almost bailed.

"Oh, boy. She has that feistiness. There are those scenes where we are arguing, she's throwing plates and so on. I had to wonder, 'Do I really want this?' She has what I call the loving blood. Passion for everything."

Javier Bardem And Wife Penelope Cruz: No Showbiz Couple

Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz lead a down-to-earth quiet life, in which their children are governed by NORMALCY and not the glamor of the trappings of the fame that comes with having a dual Oscar-winning power couple at it's helm. If you notice, the couple's children do not appear in any publication, without their faces blurred.

“You will never see a picture of my kids on Instagram. I will never do that - I feel like I am responsible for protecting their privacy."

Normalcy At All Costs: Bardem and Cruz Mandate

The intensely private couple prefer to maintain modest homes in their homeland and around the world, without press and fanfare. You won't see a sellout of their privacy to the highest bidder; no magazine cover, or posed images in People magazine to promote their brand. Their children live blissfully unaware of how famous their parents are.

“They know that we do movies, but I don’t think they know what that means or what is that all about,” explains Bardem. “It’s fine. We don’t have anything in our house that reminds them that we are actors. We really don’t care about that.”

Mythbuster: Javier Bardem Is NOT In The Walking Dead

Javier Bardem is a multi-talented actor, no doubt about that. One thing that can be categorically denied: he does NOT appear in "The Walking Dead." His look-alike is non other than Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who deftly plays the character "Negen," on AMC. Case closed.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Javier Bardem again played a character in touch with his inner psycho, opposite Johnny Depp on the Disney Franchise "Dead Men Tell No Tales." Bardem had great fun playing the relentless Captain Salazar; who only has revenge against Captain Jack Sparrow on his turbid mind.

Javier Bardem's Iconic Role: No Country For Old Men

The one thing that the public CAN thank Harvey Weinstein for is the Miramax-Produced "No Country For Old Men," and it's riveting performance by Bardem. Javier Bardem's role in "No Country For Old Men," was pivotal to the movie's success and ranks as one of the greatest movie villains of all time. Under the direction of the Independent quirky movie wunderkinds, the Cohen Brothers, Bardem turns in a truly nuanced psychopathic character in the form of a bad haircut, called (inexplicably) "Anton Chigurh." The acclaimed role won Javier Bardem an Oscar for best supporting actor. The actor cleaned up winning a Golden Globe and the coveted BAFTA award.

Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz: 3 Times A Charm?

To date, Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz have worked together three times: 1992's Jamon Jamon, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, in which Penelope Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and lastly, in the Venice Film Festival's darling, "Loving Pablo." But, newsflash, they are currently shooting "Everybody Knows" in Madrid, with Oscar-winner Asghar Farhadi directing. That will make the FOURTH time the talented couple have co-starred together.

"One of the joys, and the fun of what we do, is to create. We were very careful [during shooting] to make sure we kept that joy and that we keep being able to create and use our imagination."

Loving Pablo 2017

The couple are currently promoting their latest collaboration "Loving Pablo." The film is based on the best-selling book "Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar," by Virginia Vallejo - the Columbian journalist who had an affair with one of the most notorious drug traffickers in modern history; Pablo Escobar.

“to understand and get into the head of the people who live on this earth of ours. In this case, it’s a person who was a loving father and created such horror. It’s a terrible contradiction that was very interesting to me.”

Murder On The Orient Express: Penelope Cruz Tent Pole

Oscar winners Javier Bardem and wife Penelope Cruz, seem to balance small movies with high profile, big budget projects, with grace and aplomb. After wrapping "Loving Pablo," Cruz co-stars in a star-studded vehicle "Murder On the Orient Express," premiering this Thanksgiving season on November 10, 2017.

The Future Looks Bright: I Gotta Wear Shades

Since winning back-to-back Oscars - Bardem for 2007 in "No Country For Old Men" and Cruz in 2008 for "Vicki Cristina Barcelona," the couple make sure that they take on projects that consider the family unit FIRST. No decision is made autonomously, to ensure that wherever their jobs take them; their family comes first. I personally can't wait to see what happens next for this A-list couple.

“The first questions I ask about a film is where in the world is it being shot, the next question is when, and then I look at the project - I don’t want projects that would mean we would not be able to be together.”
