Rousey's mother was a decorated judoka; she was the first American to win the World Judo Championship. Rousey's biological father, Ron Rousey, committed suicide after learning that he would be paraplegic. He broke his back while sledding with his family. Ronda Rousey is the youngest of her three sisters. Rousey was diagnosed with apraxia and she had trouble with her speech for the first six years of her life. Her parents moved out of Riverside, California and moved into Jamestown, North Dakota to get intensive speech therapy when she was three years of age. Ronda Rousey: Judo Career

Rousey has been training for judo with her mother since age 11. Rousey qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens when she was 17. At the World Junior Judo Championship in Budapest, Hungary, Rousey won a gold medal. In 2006, Rousey was the first American female to win an A-Level tournament in 10 years. At the age of 19, Rousey won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships, making her the first US athlete to win two Junior Judo medals. At 2007 World Judo Championships, she was awarded with a silver medal. In the same year, Rousey triumphed a gold medal for the 2007 Pan American Games. Rousey competed for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China and captured a bronze medal, becoming the first American to win an Olympic medal in women's judo. Rousey retired from her judo career after competing in Olympics at the age of 21 and started her MMA career at the age of 22.
