Nanjiani married Emily V. Gordon in 2007. Gordon is a multitalented woman dabbling in writing comedy and held a job as a therapist. In 2017, Nanjiani starred in the real-life romantic comedy The Big Sick, which he wrote with his wife Emily V. Gordon. The story was taken straight from their own life. The movie tells the authentic story of how his then girlfriend, now wife, Emily found out she had a rare disease. They were only eight months into dating, but Kumail stuck by her. Kumail Nanjiani played himself, and Zoe Kazan played Emily. The journey they took wasn't easy, but through comedy and great doctors, they made it work.
