Doug Hemphill is an American sound mixer who won an Academy award for Best Sound and has been nominated for seven more in the same category. He has done noteworthy work on more than 160 films since he first began his career in 1979. He has won an Academy Award for Best Sound for the film 'The Last of the Mohicans' in 1992. Hemphill has been nominated for 'Dick Tracy' in 1990, 'Geronimo: An American Legend' in 1993, 'Air Force One' in 1997, 'The Insider' in 1999, 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World' in 2003, 'Walk the Line' in 2005, 'Life of Pi' in 2012 and 'Blade Runner 2049' in 2017. Doug Hemphill began his career in films as a Mix Recordist on the film 'Apocalypse Now'. Later, he continued to work for Francis Coppola through the release of “Rumble Fish". HE later moved to Southern California, where he did field recordings for “Gremlins.” Over the years, he’s thoroughly enjoyed collaborating on a wide variety of films as a re-recording mixer, mainly mixing sound effects but also adept at mixing dialogue and music. His films include the “X-Men” series, “Walk the Line,” “Master and Commander,” “Life of Pi,” “Almost Famous,” and several others. He has received multiple BAFTAs, Cinema Audio Society awards, and Academy Award nominations, as well as an Oscar win for “Last of the Mohicans.” Doug Hemphill is originally from Texas. His first job as a mixer came from Willie Nelson on 'Red Headed Stranger'. Nelson knew Doug Hemphill's family as he was involved in Farm Aid and Hemphill's family had been farmers in Texas.
