Who is Andreas Wellinger?

Andreas Wellinger was born in 1995 in Traunstein, Germany to parents Claudia Hummel and Hermann Wellinger. He has an impressive height of 5'10 and because he's so tall, his height helps him win his stunts as a ski jumper. He shot to fame after winning gold at the recent 2018 Winter Olympics in team competitions and also by winning gold medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2017 Ski Jump World Championships. Wellinger also won a silver at the 2016 Ski Flying World Championships. His best overall World Cup finish is fourth in the 2016/17 season. He has also won during the 2013/2014 season in Wisla, the 2016/2017 season in Willingen and in the 2017/2018 season in Nizhny Tagil. His record breaking gold win in 2018 Pyeogchang at Normal Hill was the best in his career so far. His wins and performances have been constant resulting Wellinger to amass millions of fans on his Twitter and Instagram pages.

Career so far

Wellinger made his debut at FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in 2012 while in competition in small hill in Lillehammer. He took the lead after the first round but in the second round, he fell into fifth place. In 2012, he also won the large hill team event in Kuusamo and he received two individual medals in both Engelberg and Sochi. He earned 393 points and also finished in 20th place in the World Cup. Wellinger won the Summer Grand Prix FIS Ski Jumping in 2013 ahead of Slovene ski jumper Jernei Damjan. During the first competition in 2013/2014, Wellinger brought home second place which was also his third podium and in Engelberg in the same year, he finished second again. He also ended the Four Hills Tournament in 10th place. After that, Wellinger won in Wisla 2014 and was then invited to represen Germany's ski jump team during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Wellinger took sixth place on small individual hill and won a gold medal with Germany on a team event later. He ended the 2013/2014 season on 9th place and he began season 2014/2015 in Klingenthal in third. Unfortunately, in Ruka he had a bad fall and broke his collarbone. He next jumped on the 6th of March in Lahti. Andreas Wellinger won a gold medal in the Men's Normal Hill Individual Ski Jumping event at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. He won the silver in the Men's Individual Large Hill Ski Jumping event, and also another silver as part of the German Team in the Men's Team Ski Jumping event.

Now I want to be able to return to the hill and jump again as soon as possible." But it was soon discovered that he might need surgery after all. He was forced to take a longer break than originally expected and also miss the 4-Hills-Tournament when his collar bone was not healing on its own. At first, it was planned that the injuries which he sustained when he fell in Kuusamo in 2014, would be treated conservatively. He was forced to take time off which didn't suit him but he did as was told in order to heal properly. "He will definitely be out for eight weeks. The 4-Hills-Tournament will take place without him", head coach Werner Schuster was quoted saying in December, 2014.
