Sjinkie Knegt was born July 5, 1989 in Bantega, Netherlands, where he currently resides. He began skating in 1999 and was pulled into the sport of short track speed skating because it's a competition among athletes and not just against a clock. He has a wife and daughter and loves metal working when he is not on the ice. His Instagram includes images of his family, his metal working and training sessions. Sjinkie Knegt has won medals at both the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, as well as the recent 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, he won bronze in the Men's 1000 meter and at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, he won silver in the Men's 1,500 meter. He also competed at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, but did not take home any medals. He is also the first Dutch speed skater to win gold at the world championships, which he achieved in 2017 in the 500 meter event. Aside from various other championship wins, he holds the world record for the 1,500 meter and in 2015, he was named Sportsman of the Year in the Netherlands.

Sjinkie Knegt is almost passionate to a fault, and he's been involved in many scandals involving obscene gestures he's made to fellow speed skaters, particularly Lim Hyo-jun of South Korea and Viktor An of Russia. The most recent scandal occurred at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, where a podium photo shows Knegt pointing his middle finger at the South Korean gold medalist. According to Twitter, Knegt denies these claims, stating it was simply a bad photo of himself and the gesture was not intentional. The short track speed skating star has had his fair share of sports-related injuries. He had surgery at the end of 2013 after an injury left him with torn cartilage in his left knee. Then, in 2016, he was unable to compete in the National Championships in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands due to a fever. Finally, at the 2016 World Cup in Dordrecht, Netherlands, he took a hard fall which caused a break of three ribs and injured a lung, his liver and his spleen. Aside from all of this, he was still ranked 1st in the 1,500 meter in the 2016-2017 World Cup season. In the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, he competed in the Men's 500 meter, Men's 1000 meter, Men's 1500 meter, and Men's 5000 meter relay.
