The Olympic Athlete Has Come Back From Multiple Injuries
The path to success and Olympic gold did not come easily for the 21-year-old Hyojun. In middle school, Lim Hyojun suffered from a fractured right shinbone and was out of the sport for 18 months. In high school, Hyojun experienced multiple injuries during events, including torn ligaments and a fractured bone in his right ankle. In another event, Hyojun suffered from an injured waist and fractured wrist. During his 2017/2018 World Cup season, the Olympic athlete suffered from a back injury which caused him to miss the World Cup events in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, and Shanghai.
2018: Hyojun's First Olympic Games
The short track speed skating phenom's first appearance as an Olympic athlete was the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, in his home country of South Korea. Hyojun has been competing since he was in primary school and trains for four hours each day in his sport of speed skating. Growing up, Hyojun began competing as a swimmer as requested by his parents, but due to an eardrum injury, he was forced to stop competing. He began skating with his primary school team because there was an ice rink close to his home. He won a gold medal at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics in Innsbruck for the Men's 1000 m. He has also won in the Men's 1000 m and Men's 1500 m at the 2017/2018 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup's Budapest leg, which is how he earned a spot on the Olympic team.
