Calhoun County High School also produced Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver Alshon Jeffery, though not at the same time as Colter. Colter would go on to graduate from Calhoun and spend a year year at a community college, Benedict College, before ultimately transferring out to attend the land of the Gamecocks, the University of South Carolina. Here, Colter would receive his Bachelor's in Fine Arts in Theater in the Spring of 1999 but he wouldn't let it halt his academic pursuits just yet. He would then go on to receive his Masters in Fine Arts, or MFA in Acting from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of Fine Arts. With an educational prowess in acting and theater, it is pretty evident to see how he flourishes in 'Luke Cage.'
The TV Shows and Films of Mike Colter
Before he was 'Luke Cage,' Mike Colter starred in the TV Show 'The Good Wife' and made cameos in other TV Shows like 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.' One of his major film roles would be that of the boxer 'Big Willie Little' in 'Million Dollar Baby.' The role would require a slight workout, in fact, he was only required to gain about 15 pounds for his role in 'Million Dollar Baby' while training with real life Boxing Trainer Martin Snow at the Trinity Boxing Gym. For his role as 'Luke Cage,' however, the workout would have to get even more real. Mike Colter would have to double that and gain 30 pounds to play the bulletproof bad boy. The Personal Life of Mike Colter
Mike Colter is married to Iva Colter and he has been since 2016. Mike Colter met Iva during his time spent obtaining his Masters in Fine Arts at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Fine Arts. Iva, nowhere near an actress, was obtaining her Ph.D. Colter believes she brings balance to his acting life, not wanting a wife who works in the same field as him to where dinner discussions would just be about more work so this makes perfect sense. The two also have a daughter who was born the same year the two were wed. Iva Colter is also a cousin of Award-Winning Actress Viola Davis. Mike Colter is also really close friends with action Assaf Cohen. Mike Colter's brother is also a Secret Service Agent for the United States of America. Despite playing large characters with emphasis on their physique such as 'Luke Cage' and 'Big Willie Little' and 'Spartan Jameson Locke,' Mike Colter is not a fan of the gym. He even had this to say in regards to working out and his diet:
I hate the gym, so I try to diversify my workouts with swimming and basketball. Indoors, it's less boring than running. I do find that diet is key. I eat lots of lean protein, no soda, no fast food or fried foods, and a lot of water. But I love food and often cook.
