Who is Michela Moioli?

Italian snowboard star Michela Moioli was born in 1995. She represented Italy at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, and also at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang where she won a gold medal. Moioli qualified at the age of 18 for the Olympic final of the snowboardcross in Sochi 2014 where she had a bad fall thereby forcing her to leave the game and her fight for the podium. As a result of the injury, she had to undergo a crucial ligament surgery that caused her to close the World Cup competitive season prematurely. Moioli is nicknamed Miky by her friends and family. She serves in the Armed Forces apart from being an athlete. She has studied Philosophy, Psychology and Teaching. Moioli can speak English and Italian languages fluently. She trained in the club CS Esercito in Italy under coach Luca Pozzolini who is a national level coach. She made her World Cup Debut - 2012 in Telluride, CO, United States of America. She tore the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in her left knee in the final of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. In December 2012 she suffered concussion following a crash in training for the World Cup event in Montafon, Austria. She missed the event but returned to action later in the same month. Moioli took up skiing as a child in Foppolo, Italy. Her parents convinced her to switch to snowboarding as they thought she would have a greater chance of success compared to skiing. She regards winning a gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang as her most memorable achievement. Her heroes are US snowboarder Nate Holland and Italian alpine skier Christof Innerhofer. She believes in the philosophy, "You have to have a strong character to overcome the tension and pressure in a race. Then it takes luck, because with contact you never know who will remain standing. Of course you still need skill." Moioli became the first Italian woman to win the World Cup snowboard cross overall title, after topping the standings for the 2015/16 season.

Wonderful performance at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games

Italy's women's team continued to bring home the gold at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, as Michela Moioli took first place in the snowboard cross. The 22-year-old from Bergamo crossed Lindsay Jacobellis, the American athlete who was ahead for much of the race, and held steady for the win. Jacobellis finished in fourth place, with previous winner Eva Samkova of the Czech Republic in third and France's Julia Pereira in second place. It's the first Olympic gold medal for Moioli and the second for Italy, following Arianna Fontana's victory in the 500m short-track speed skating. "Women are women: we have an extra gear. Seeing Arianna win gave me a boost and I said to myself: 'I don't want silver or bronze, I'm here for the gold,'" Moioli said. Jacobelli was only too surprised by her defeat. She started celebrating too soon and a defeat was totally unexpected for her. Lindsey Jacobellis' wait for Olympic gold continues, as Michela Moioli earned the gold medal. Jacobellis led for the bulk of the first half of the race until Moioli climbed into first. Jacobellis was gracious in defeat. “I mean, I could be upset about it, but where is that going to get me?” Jacobellis said. “Anything can happen in boardercross, and I didn’t get injured today. The fact I’m still walking out of here is great.” Jacobellis was the best and most-durable rider for more than a decade in the game. She has nine Winter X Games titles, 29 World Cup wins and 49 podiums in 84 World Cup starts. But the podium was this time designated and designed for Michela Moioli. Moioli was very happy with her victory. She reached the final of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as a teenager, only to crash out with an injury that kept her out for competition for nearly a year. The men's Italian team have so far brought in one silver medal, for Federico Pellegrino in the cross-country ski sprint, and two bronzes, for Dominik Windisch in the men's biathlon 10 km sprint and Nicola Tumelero in the 10,000m speed skating. Federica Brignone won another bronze in the women's giant slalom. That ranks Italy ninth on the medal table overall which is a marked improvement on the Sochi Games, when Italy didn't win a single gold medal and finished 22nd out of 26 countries.
