While in High School, he participated in drama productions and from there his interest in the field up-scaled. His teacher described him as a typical class clown and he used to understand the frailty of the human mind better than everyone else. He later enrolled at the George Washington University and while there, he was a member of the comedy group recess and also the Lambda chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. While in college, Miller attended the British American Drama Academy in London; where he studied Shakespeare for some time. Miller admits to be using marijuana quite enthusiastically. In an interview, he described about the similarity between his real self and his onscreen character Erlich Bachman in the sitcom, 'Silicon Valley'. "He is just sort of, unfortunately for me, a magnification of certain aspects of my personality, mixed in with a couple of fictional things...I am, at times, a Falstaffian figure; he very much is that too. We are in line with each other as nihilists: He thinks you should tell it like it is ... because everybody's opinion including yours doesn't mean anything." Miller was suffering from an undiagnosed cerebral arteriovenous malformation on his right frontal lobe. He stated that because of the malformation, he became more philosophical, narrated his behaviors, and was unable to sleep while filming 'Yogi Bear' in New Zealand in 2010. After his brain surgery which was quite was successful, he feels quite fine. On December 9, 2016, in a silly verbal brawl, Miller was arrested and jailed in Los Angeles on grounds of assaulting a driver of the Uber car service company because of an argument he had with the driver over Donald Trump. He was later bailed with a fine of $20,000. He recognizes himself as an atheist. In late 2017, Miller was caught in sexual misconduct allegations from his college days back in 2001. An anonymous woman who too had attended the George Washington University with Miller said in an interview that Miller (her then boyfriend) had become violent with her during a sexual encounter. She added that he allegedly choked, shook, and punched her in the mouth, all without her consent. After consulting other witnesses who knew about the incident, it was confirmed that the allegation was true and that it was brought to the attention of the college at that time. It was found out that Miller was suspended from college for some time as a form of appeasement to the accuser.

According to reports, he proposed to Gorney in the sculpture garden at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Miller was so nervous when he went to propose her that he injured his knee while going, hitting it fairly hard on the ground below. “What they don’t tell you,” Miller added, “is that when you get down on your knee to propose, just don’t do it so quickly. I went down fast, and it really hurt my knee.” Which means his knee came crashing down on a concrete floor. Yikes! Gorney was once in a abusive relationship before she married Miller. She is a feminist and hates to be defined by her significant other. Her views on feminism are something that is in her genes, as she revealed that both her mother and her grandmother were feminists. “Last month, an ironic (and since updated) New York Post headline about my art installation went viral: ‘T.J. Miller’s wife is making a name for herself in New York.’ While I know that it was meant it to be flattering — and I was flattered by the coverage — not everyone on Twitter took it that way. Suddenly tens of thousands of retweets, likes, and comments turned into hundreds of thousands. Many people didn’t appreciate the irony and saw it as an opportunity to start a meaningful dialogue about feminism. I was both overwhelmed by and grateful for the outpouring of support in response to something that had become so normalized for me — the idea that many women are seen as nothing more than their husband’s wife. It made me think about representations of married women in the press, and how many people share my experience of being defined only in relationship to their significant other.” She posted this to tell people that she wants to be addressed as herself and not by T.J. Millers wife.
