Tips and tricks on how to prevent eye wrinkles

Eye wrinkles are probably the first signs of our body aging. Ungainly and unsightly, it can reduce the radiance of even the most beautiful of faces.

Not everyone knows though that the premature appearance of these undesirable creases is mostly avoidable. With just a few changes in our daily habits we can delay and even reduce them.

Causes of Eye Wrinkles

Before you make a mad dash to seek out the most expensive anti eye wrinkle product out there, it is important to know what besides age, causes them. Other than natural aging. the biggest culprit is harsh sunlight. The UV rays of the sun affects skin around our eyes first, as it is thinner and more sensitive.

Some other reasons are:

1. Age

This one is a given. As we age our skin cells starts sagging due to the slow production of collagen and elastin.

2. Hereditary

It is hereditary. If your mum developed wrinkles at a comparatively younger age and/or if dry skin is the bane of your genetic pool then in all probability, you will get them early too.

3. Sun Exposure

Exposure to the sun without the aid of sunglasses can cause you to squint which leads to eye wrinkles.

4. Poor skin care routines

Skipping skin care routines such as not using sun blocks, and failing to daily moisturize are some of the causes of the early breakdown of your skin texture.

5. Frowning habits

If you’re prone to frowning or are more facially expressive, then, yup, you’ll get them sooner than others!

How to reduce eye wrinkles

Reducing eye wrinkles requires the conscious effort of inculcating certain healthy habits into our daily regimen. Read on to know more.

1. Wearing sunglasses

Get yourself the best ones that offer maximum coverage and UV protection. Splurge, if you have to; you will not regret it. Wrinkles are caused due to the breaking down of the collagen and elastin in our skin. Constant squinting of the eyes hastens this unwanted process.

When sunglasses are not used, the eyes naturally squint in reflex from the blinding glare. Do this and over a period of time, you practically open the doors to the early onset of these unbecoming lines.

2. Use a good sunblock

A sunblock or sunscreen is not a luxury for your skin; it is a necessity. Pick the right one as per your skin tone. Ideally it should cover a broad spectrum to protect you skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays that can cause irreversible damage to your skin over the years.

3. Use of contacts lenses

This is for all the contact lens users out there. Notice the next time you inert your lenses how you tug at the delicate skin around your eye. Chances are you may not even realize it. Treat your delicate skin with some extra TLC to avoid eye wrinkles. You can insert and remove the lenses without pulling it down all the way.

4. Stop Smoking

Smoking can exacerbate and make wrinkles appear sooner and in a more pronounced fashion.  There are two reasons for this. One, tobacco smoke contains carbon monoxide and nicotine which affects the blood supply to your skin and makes it age faster. The second is, the constant smoke makes your eyes squint which further aggravates the condition. Giving up smoking gives you a whole lot of health benefits, fewer lines being one of them.

5. Face packs

There is no doubt about the wonders a suitable face pack can do for you. However, they are not meant to be applied on the delicate skin around your eyes. A carelessly applied face pack especially a tightening one will do your skin more harm than good. Select the right type for your skin tone and follow instructions right down to a T in order to protect your delicate skin.

6. Developing a healthy skin regimen

Prevention is always better than cure. Maintaining a healthy skin care regimen is one of the biggest ways to avoid wrinkles in the first place. Use good quality skin products to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin every day and you will have a lot to thank for in your later years.

Home remedies for eye wrinkles

Home remedies are safe, natural options and the holistic way to reduce eye wrinkles. However, they do take time and patience to show results. Below are 5 such natural remedies to try:

1. The Egg White Recipe

An egg white application around the eyes is known to tighten the skin and toning it, thus reducing the appearance of eye wrinkles. Beat it until frothy and leave it on for 10 minutes after application. Rinse off gently with warm water.

2. Natural Eye Moisturizers

An application of castor oil around the eyes before bed every night moisturizes the skin and gives you younger looking skin. Rosemary oil too is a great moisturizer. Dipping the tip of your finger and massaging the skin around your eyes will aid in reducing fine lines. Avoid going too near your eyes.

Olive oil, along with being an excellent moisturizer, is also a humectant; in other words, it locks in moisture. Warm the oil a bit to get the maximum benefits and massage it gently into the skin around your eyes. You can either leave it on or gently wipe it off. This can be done anytime during the day or night.

3. Cucumber eye mask

Cucumber hydrates the skin and provides it with essential moisturizing properties. Salons use sliced cucumber on the eyes, as an inherent part of their facials. You don’t need to get expensive beauty treatments to get the same benefit. Puree a cucumber and apply the paste around your eyes and rinse off with warm water gently after 15 minutes. Your skin will thank you for it. For best results, use a cucumber that’s been stored in the refrigerator.

4. Avocado Puree Mask

Avocadoes are packed with the antioxidant Carotenoid, which aids in removing the free radicals from your cells. Enriched with Vitamin E and C, the building blocks of healthy skin, it also contains monosaturated fats which moisturize and hydrates your skin cells. To use, apply avocado puree around your eyes and leave on for 15 minutes. Gently rinse with warm water and pat dry.

5. Ginger and Honey remedy

A 1:1 ratio of crushed ginger and honey can also do wonders for the fine lines around your eyes. Massage it and leave it on for at least an hour. Wash it off gently with warm water. Honey too, is a humectant and an effective moisturizer and ginger is known to aid good blood supply.

Care Instructions: Before and After treatments

The anti-wrinkle treatment options are Laser Treatment, Botox treatment, Filler treatment, Chemical peels and Cosmetic Surgery. Out of these, Cosmetic surgery is the only invasive procedure and should be considered as the final resort. It is also the one that provides long-lasting effects.

Before heading for a treatment

It is important to know that while such treatments promise quick results based on your requirements, some of which are achievable with just one session, but multiple sessions to get the desired effects. You will be experiencing some mild pains during the treatment, so brace for that. A few treatments will leave your skin with post-effects so you might want to raincheck on that coffee or lunch date unless you are comfortable walking around with a flushed face and that raw and sunburnt feeling.

Since some of the treatments may have the skin peeling to make way for new, beautiful skin, you might want to postpone some activities or work for the next few days post-treatment. Get some stay-home activities and groceries in advance to tide you through the next few days.

Aftercare

1. Laser treatment

After a laser treatment, it is advisable to keep the skin lubricated and moist with Lubriderm or Aquaphor. Sun exposure for the initial few days is discouraged. Your dermatologist will advise accordingly.

2. Filler treatment

After a filler treatment, it is advised to ice the face several times a day to relieve stress to the skin. An over-the-counter medication like Motrin is advised for pain, if any. Benadryl can be used for any welts or itching. Your dermatologist will advise accordingly.

3. Botox treatment

After a Botox treatment, it takes roughly ninety minutes for the Botox to adhere to the muscle. It is therefore recommended to sit upright during that time, avoid strenuous exercises in the first twenty-four hours and not touch the skin at the injection site for at least three hours. Other than that, everything else is acceptable.

4. Chemical Peels

For Chemical peels, instructions and aftercare treatments are provided depending on the depth of the peel. After the skin peels off, instructions such as using lotions with high emollient content and use of a sunblock with a high SPF content will be strictly advised.

Consult a reputed dermatologist if you do choose this path. After a cosmetic surgery, a strict regimen of skin routine should be diligently followed. Maintaining a non-smoking lifestyle and eating a nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables are generally advised.

Conclusion

Your eyes are the windows to your soul. Find the best treatment that you're comfortable with, downtime and price point. Keep them beautiful for as long as you possibly can by avoiding the early onset of eye wrinkles.
