Dorota Kobiela, the director, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Kobiela was awarded the Minister of Culture Scholarship for special achievements in painting and graphics for four consecutive years. Kobiela discovered animation and film through her friends and then threw herself into learning these new artistic disciplines. Kobiela attended direction faculty in The Warsaw Film School. Kobiela has directed one live action short film The Hart in Hand (2006) and five animated short films, The Letter (2004), Love me, Mr. Bear(2005), Chopin's Drawings (2011) and Little Postman (2011).

The girl hopes to meet her longing dad. The sixth animated short of Kobiela, Loving Vincent came up in 2017. Loving Vincent aimed to combine her passions for painting and film and intended to paint the entire film herself. Loving Vincent is her feature film debut.

Loving Vincent is the first fully painted animated feature film of director, Kobiela. Loving Vincent is a 2017 animated biographical drama film about the life of painter Vincent van Gogh and particularly about the circumstances of Van Gogh’s death. Kobiela and Hugh Welchman (her husband) were inspired by the work and life of Vincent van Gogh to create an animated film inspired by his art. Kobiela found 125 classically trained oil painters to create each frame of the film based on van Gogh’s most iconic images. Kobiela and Welchman used these paintings to tell the story of Armand Roulin, the son of a mailman who is asked to deliver a letter after Van Gogh’s death that the artist had written to his brother and closest confidante. Armand retraces van Gogh’s steps and hears different sometimes conflicting perspectives on his life. In an interview, Kobiela talked about the painstaking process of making the film. In the interview, Kobiela talked regarding the idea of Loving Vincent. Kobiela said she wanted to combine both her passion for painting and film and make a painted film. Kobiela was 30 when she came up with this idea to do Loving Vincent. Kobiela more than van Gogh’s paintings were inspired by how Vincent lived his life. Kobiela confessed about her suffering from depression all her life and got inspired by strong Vincent picked himself up from similarly terrible life setbacks as the young man in twenties. Kobiela described his way of bringing beauty to the world. The letters of van Gogh has helped Kobiela at a low point in her life, and hence Kobiela got inspired to take his film.
