Rose McGowan: The Early Years

Rose McGowan is an American actress, model and singer who is best known for her work on the TV Show Charmed. She was born in Florence, Italy on September 5, 1973 to American parents. Her mother is a writer, named Terri and her father is an artist named Daniel McGowan. Rose was born in Italy because at the time, her father ran an Italian chapter of the Children of God, a so called "hippie cult" in which both Rose's parents held membership until 1978. Rose McGowan spent her early childhood within communes of the group and traveled often through Europe with her family. Rose McGowan first got into modeling as a child through her father's art contacts in Italy, appearing in Vogue Bambini and various other Italian magazines. When she was 10, her and her family returned to the United States, settling in Eugene, Oregon. Rose McGowan's teen years were troubled. She lived in Portland, Oregon as a runaway and became friends with a group of drag queens there. Her parents eventually divorces and she lived with her father in Seattle, Washington. There, she attended Roosevelt High School and Nova Alternative High School, and held a job at McDonald's. Rose's relationship with her parents was never good however, and when she was 15 she officially emancipated herself from them, moving to Los Angeles, California. It was here that her career in acting would begin.

Rose McGowan's first appeared in a Hollywood film with a small role in the Pauly Shore comedy Encino Man, which was released in 1992. Her other early work also includes a role as Amy Blue in The Doom Generation, which earned her the attention of film critics and a nomination for "Best Debut Performance" at the Independent Spirit Awards. In 1996, Rose McGowan's rise to prominence began when she was cast as Tatum Riley in the horror film Scream. Scream was a huge success, grossing over $100 million in its initial run. In the 1990's McGowan lent her talents to a variety of independent films, including roles in Southie, Going All the Way, and Lewis and Clark and George. Then, in 1997, she appeared in the short film Seed, as well as appeared alongside Peter O'Toole in the 1998 film adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Phantoms. She also gained a lot of attention that same year for the revealing fishnet outfit she wore to the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. Her next move was a starring role in the dark comedy Jawbreaker, a film about a troubled but popular high school student, played by Rose McGowan, who attempts to cover up her involvement in a classmate's murder. Her performance in Jawbreaker earned her a nomination for Best Villain at the 1999 MTV Movie Awards. In the early 2000's Rose was cast to play the character of Paige Matthews on the WB supernatural TV Show Charmed as a replacement for Shannen Doherty when she left the show. After the seventh season of the show, she was invited to be a producer alongside her co-stars Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano, but turned the offer down. Charmed ended its long run on May 21, 2006. Just after Charmed ended, Rose McGowan starred in the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez production Grindhouse. Grindhouse was a double feature consisting of two portions, Planet Terror and Death Proof. Rose appeared in both, cast as a go-go dancer named Cherry Darling in Planet Terror and as Pam in Death Proof.

Rose McGowan is one of over 30 women speaking out about sexual abuse and misconduct in Hollywood. She claims to have been raped by Harvey Weinstein in 1997 at the Sundance Film Festival. She says she did not go to police or report the incident at the time, because she was advised by a lawyer that she would not win the case. She did complain internally, however, but claims because of this she was blacklisted in Hollywood and had several projects dropped. This all came to light in October 2017, when The New York Times revealed that she was part of a settlement involving Harvey Weinstein over an alleged sexual harassment case. Just after this, she began to publicly speak out about the exploitation and abuse she and other women in Hollywood, have suffered over at least the past twenty years. A lot of the accusations going around are about who knew this was going on and who decided to turn the other way and allow it to keep happening. To date, Harvey Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, including Rose McGowan.
