'The Master of Disguise' and Other Small Roles
Rivera started modelling as a baby, appearing in campaigns for KMart. When she was four, she played Hillary Winston on the sitcom âThe Royal Family,â for which she received a Young Artists Award nomination. She continued making small appearances on a number of television shows throughout her childhood, including âFresh Prince of Bel-Air,â âBaywatchâ and âEven Stevens.â Her first film role was in 2002 in âThe Master of Disguise.â She had a small role in âThe Master of Disguise,â a Dana Carvey adventure-comedy. 'Glee,' 'Glee: The 3D Concert Movie' and Stardom
She continued booking small roles until 2009, when she auditioned for âGlee.â Rivera was intrigued by the casting notice that listed she would have to sing, dance and act for the part. She was cast as Santana Lopez, the mean spirited cheerleader in the musical comedy show. Rivera had a recurring role in the first season, but was upgraded to a series regular for the subsequent five seasons. Her role as Santana evolved with the popularity of the show. âGleeâ was an enormous success with a mostly teenage audience and became known for its depiction of LGBTQ characters and other people traditionally considered outsiders. Santanaâs original purpose on the series was as a villain, though she was also cast a comic foil to her best friend, ditzy cheerleader Brittany, played by Heather Morris. Both of them were sidekicks to head cheerleader Quinn Fabray, played by Diana Agron. In season two, Rivera and Morris both became series regulars, and started getting more interesting story lines. Santanaâs most prominent, celebrated and memorable story line begins in season two when she discovers that she has romantic feelings for Brittany. Over the course of the season it is revealed that her tendency to bully comes from her hiding the fact that she is a lesbian. She confesses her feelings to Brittany, who returns them, and the two become an official couple. Santana is also outed by a friend at school, and then struggles with coming out to her family. She and Brittany eventually break up, but the ex girlfriends get back together in the final season. Rivera has been publicly supportive of the story line, saying that she thinks Brittany is Santanaâs soul mate. âGleeâ earned Rivera critical acclaim, awards and stardom. The show was huge success, drawing in viewers and selling singles. All of the original cast was made up of previously unknown, young actors, and they all became instant stars. Rivera, Morris, Agron, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer among others all became popular Hollywood stars. Santanaâs coming out storyline was particularly well reviewed by critics, who were impressed with the handling of the material. Santana and Brittany were often comic relief, so the transition to their storyline was heartfelt and emotional did not go unnoticed. During her run on âGlee,â Rivera won three American Latino Media Arts Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Her ALMA awards were won in 2011 and 2012. She won for Favorite Female Musical Artist in 2011, and the same award in 2012, along with Favorite TV Actress in a comedy. In the final verse, he sings, âevery day I wake up celebrating shit, why? âCause I just dodged a bullet from a crazy bitch.â The women in the âIDFWUâ music video wear red and white cheerleading uniforms, similar to Riveraâs character in âGlee.â Near the end of their relationship, Rivera caught him hanging out with pop singer Ariana Grande when he was supposedly out of town. Later, she ended up tweeting about him taking her watch in an angry moment, and he responded by putting out a press release that they had broken up.
