Kareem Abeed is a Syrian producer whose recent work on ‘The Last Men in Aleppo’ has earned him his first Academy Award nomination. The documentary short has received a lot of attention from critics after winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival last year.

‘The Last Men in Aleppo’ is about the Syrian Civil Defense, known as the ‘White Helmets’ and their experiences in the Syrian Civil War. The White Helmets are volunteers from the city of Aleppo, who are trying to keep their citizens safe. Abeed and his team will be up against the producers of 'Abacus: Small Enough to Jail,' 'Faces and Places, 'Icarus,' and 'Strong Island.' Although the movie’s other producer, Soren Steen Jepersen, is known for producing and directing award winning documentaries, this is Abeed’s first professional credit. Jepersen represents the Danish production company Larm Film, while Abeed represents his production company, Aleppo Media Center. Both men are in contention for an Oscar 2018, to be presented on March 4, 2018. If we're lucky Abdeed will be nominated for Oscar 2019, as well.

Abeed has been working on Aleppo since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War, and, he was one of the founders of the Aleppo Media Center. He is currently the technical and artistic administrator of the Aleppo Media Center as well as the director of Radio Aleppo Media Center. The Aleppo Media Center was founded in 2011 and prides itself on being a reliable source of Syrian news. Abeed has also been a producer, working with video content about Syria for several news outlets, such as CNN, BBC and Channel 4. ‘The Last Men in Aleppo’ was picked up by the PBS program 'Point of View', which has helped the movie gain a wider audience.
