30 Creative Hairstyles To Rock The 60s Look

Iconic looks from the 60s

The 60s are known for a lot of things. Music, Civil and Women's Rights, James Bond (and Bond Girls) .... but when you think of the 60s you think of the HAIR and crazy neon colors!  As creative and free as the 60's were, five key hairs styles defined the era; we are going to give you some fun, modern twists on how to wear those looks today!

Bouffant

To achieve a bouffant hairstyle, you need a teasing brush and hairspray. Lots and lots of hairspray. Starting off with dirty hair may be best, as dirty hair is easier to tease! The "poof" of the bouffant is usually at the front of your hairline.

Tease your hair by lifting it into sections, and brushing the section gently towards your scalp, giving your hair volume. When you finish each section, flip it forward over your face. When you have the amount of volume you are looking for, you flip it all back, and smooth the top layer and style as you please!

There are lots of ways to update this do for the modern day. It will work best on medium hair or long hair, but there are ways to incorporate a bouffant look with short hair too!

Bouffant with Bangs

Quick and Easy! This take on the 60's bouffant hairstyle works for even short and medium length hair. This 'do can be worn with any occasion or makeup style.

Buffant Pony

We recommend this hairstyle for those semi-dirty hair days when you need to look put together but don't quite have the time for a full styling session.

This style will likely work best for medium to long hair. If you are going for the curly ponytail, it is always easiest to curl before you tie your hair up, rather than after pulling it all up into the ponytail.

Curly Bouffant

The 60's bouffants were synonymous with EXTRA body, and even launched a popular saying in the south around the female population "The taller the hair, the closer to Heaven" . . .  meaning the Bigger - the Better!

This style option is excellent for those with thinner hair looking for a more full-bodied look.

Half Up Bouffant

The Half up bouffant is usually best reserved for formal events. This style can work with short-medium hair or long hair. Adding in cute accessories like jeweled bobby pins, or small braids are fun ways to style up the half-bouffant even more! Or if you wanted to spice things up - add some floral garland-styled headbands to your bouffant.

Bouffants and Headbands

If you really want to channel the 60's vibe. Using thick headbands and LOTS of hairspray is the way to go!

Short Hair Bouffant

Obviously meant for short hair, this bouffant 'do will put a lot of emphasis on the wearer's makeup and jewelry, so go for glam! Really pull from the era and use a heavy black liquid liner, you will look like you are stepping out of a Bond film!

Beehive

The Beehive is similar to the bouffant in that the idea of Bigger is Better is exceptionally critical here. There is a significant amount of more teasing involved than with the bouffant.

Traditional 60's Beehive

Increasingly popular for prom or vintage inspired weddings. The traditional beehive LITERALLY looks like a beehive!

Beehive Hair with Flowers

This take on the beehive is slightly smaller than a traditional beehive, but by adding in floral elements, and with the right makeup (as seen here) you can ooze the 60's style.

Half o' Hive

Do you love that look of a long and curly bouffant? Did you add enough hairspray to make it last overnight? Then this hairstyle is great for you. First, tease the hair around the crown of your head a little more, pin back and Voila! Your hair looks beautiful.

This is going to be especially easy for medium hair and long hair.

Beehive with a Bow or Flowers

Just a cute, modern twist. The bow can be done with your hair, or you can add a pop of color and use a ribbon or add flowers; the decision is yours!

The great thing with this hairdo is you can go as crazy or as subtle as you want with style and it will still go together!

Beehive with "Braids"

Adding braids is much more challenging, especially when completing details to the bottom support of the hive should be saved for times when you have plenty of time to get ready.

The Amy Winehouse

One of the most iconic and powerful pop female music artists of all time (Rest in Peace), The Amy Winehouse look is simple - pile as much as you can on top of your head for the hive, then curl the rest.

3. Pixie Cut

Pixie cuts embodied the empowerment of the female in the 60s. It was a rebellion against the idea that neatly styled; long hair was the embodiment of feminity.

Pixie cuts are easy to maintain, and style, and achieving this look is as simple as a trip to your hairstylist and a little bit of courage and commitment!

True Pixie

Inspired and coined by another international female icon, Twiggy, the shortest variation of the pixie cut. Twiggy was a well-known Model, Actress, and musician and set many of the trends we idolize and mimic to this day!

This style is excellent for those who already have short hair looking for a drastic change.

Pixie Faux Hawk

Much like the reverse, and much classier mullet, this much more modern variation of the pixie hairdo is short in the back on long on the top.

Pixie Bob

This other modern pixie option features a close cut in the back, with longer sides. This style has all the flexibility of the bob, with the ease of styling of the true pixie, it is also a good transition hairstyle should you decide to grow your hair out from the "Twiggy."

Pixie with some Color

A big improvement in the female world since the 60's is that we are no longer chastised for expressing any sort of creativity that expresses ourselves outside of the social norms.

A pixie cut may be daring enough, but for others adding in some color their hair finishes up the look and expresses their own personal style.

Faux Pixie

Opposite of the Pixie with Color, the Faux pixie is for those with medium to long hair not quite ready for the commitment. It is easy todo, and you get the satisfaction of confusing your aqcuantences by showing up one day with short hair, then the next with long!

Undercut Pixie

This style is pretty much the hawkless faux hawk. If you don't have the time to style the faux hawk look this spunky style is what you are left with - rocking the faux hawk!

Fun, daring, and minimal styling required, this style leaves most wishing they had the guts to go that far!

4. Head Scarf

Scarves became a huge accessory in the 50's, and the 60s saw a new twist on how to wear them! They were usually silk or some other delicate fabric with bright colors and bold patterns.

There are endless ways to style a scarf, so do we need to give more reasons to buy more?

Scarf Headbands

This style is timeless and perfect for a day outdoors without a hair-tie headache!

Scarf Pony

This is best with smaller scarves, but tying in a scarf and using as a bow is a good modern take on the 60s scarf trend.

Forehead Covering Scarf

Tying up a scarf to sit at the start of your hair line is a good option for larger scarves, but also works great during the summer to transistion from a busy day, to a bonfire night.

Full Coverage

Having a bad hair day?

Is it going to rain the day after you try a new bold hair color - bright red perhaps?

Try tying a scarf into a turban to keep that color in place.

Turban with Hair Down

Choose a bright color with bold pattern, style your ends, and cover that bad hair day!

Scarf Wrapped Bun

A much more modern twist, tying up silk scarf in your bun is one way to ooze 60's-ness.

Hippie Hair

The 60's Hippie look is defined by long, needle straight hair, usually with braids of flowers. There are of course a lot of fun things you can do with long hair, but when going for this look, it is best to keep it simple. Makeup should be kept simple, clothing loose and flowing.

This isn't just a Halloween look! Hippie hairstyles can be incorporated into everyday life!

Long Flowing Locks

Long flowing hair is the first image that comes to mind when thinking the 60's hippie - both men and women!

Simple and natural, almost primal, this look will show just how down to earth you are! Best to keep makeup and outfit simple with this hairstyle if you want to put out the 60s vibe.

Flower Crown

Great for adding a pop of color, and channeling your inner flower child. The flower crown look can be used on all hairstyles!

Straight Bangs

Long, untamed hair with straight bangs was another iconic look of the 60's, but more popular with the edgier hippies. Today it is just stylish.

Partial Braids

Whimsical braids were a staple of the 60's - allowing the hair to flow still and move freely while keeping a majority it out of the wearers face.

Stick Straight

Some of you have seen that photo of you mother or grandmother looking like her hair was starched, that's because back in the day, they used clothes irons to straighten their hair!

Most images will show only super long hair, but with modern tools, this idea is great for Medium hair or short, Stick straight hair was a staple of the 60's and 70's, and much easier to obtain today!

60's Style Headbands

Perfect for long, medium or even short hair! A perfectly placed headband not only creates a natural semi-messy poof. But can also help channel nature if you choose to tie in a feather.
