50 Best & Worst Hairstyles For Women With Long Faces

Women with Long Face Shape

Long Face or an Oblong Face shape is typically longer than others. Every face is different and falls in any 6 of face shape categories. Every face shape also demands certain hairstyles and makeup techniques to balance out the features and camouflage the length. Many celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Liv Tyler and Kelly Reilly have a long face. These celebrities always manage to look gorgeous by sporting the right hairstyle.

There are certain hairstyles which flatter the physical parameters of a long face very beautifully. These hairstyles manage to make the long face look like a perfect oval shape.

A long face mostly has a long forehead. Your haircut should cover the broad expanse of your forehead and reduce its length. Bangs are a great idea for an oblong face. A straight blunt cut or slightly side-swept bangs look great on an oblong face. A wavy hairstyle also manages to reduce the length of a long face. Bangs, for an oblong face, are best when they take up 1/3rd of the face length.

While getting a haircut for an oblong face, you need to create somebody and width on the sides of your face with either horizontal or diagonal lines. Try and give some curls and waves to widen your face. A bob cut for an oblong face should have a longer back than the front. If you make your back shorter than your front, your face angles will sharpen giving an illusion of a longer face.

You should also avoid too much volume on the front as this will lengthen your face. You should also avoid long straight locks by your side without bangs, high ponytails or updos. Layer free longer styles will also make your face appear longer. A unique hairstyle with layers or bangs can be given only to frame your face, and the rest of the hair can be left long.

You can try highlighting your side tresses to create a dimension of width. Ombre highlights suits long hair better as it draws the attention on your hair rather than your face.

One needs to study these basic facts before getting a haircut or a hairstyle for a long face. A wrong hairstyle will ruin the look of an oblong face making the female face appear even longer. A female should not decide her hairstyle with what is in fashion randomly without consulting a professional hairstylist. A female should consider her face shape and see if the latest fashion trends would suit her face or not.  A female should select a hairstyle that matches not only her face shape but also her style, personality, hair texture and personal preference.

Important Tips to Keep in Mind While Choosing Hairstyles for Oblong Face

1. Always try and add curls and waves for an oblong face. These help in creating an illusion of width for your face and helps to tone down the length of your hair.

2. Bangs are the best friend of an oblong face. Straight cut bangs for side-swept bangs do their trick of widening your face and toning down your facial length. These cover your big forehead and should be cut in a length that they graze your eyebrows.

3. Long shape faces cannot style their hair in high updos as these will further elongate their faces. Updos add a lot of length on the top with their volume, and on an oblong face, these will look weird. People with oblong faces cannot style their hair in high ponytails or ballerina buns.

4. Going for highlights or streaks is also a clever way to widen your face if you have an oblong face. You can try hair eclipsing which is a new technology of hair coloring in which the highlights are done in such a way that it helps in contouring your face.

These tips and tricks should be kept in mind before you select a hairstyle for your oblong face.

Do You Have a Long Face?

If you are not sure whether you have a long face or not, it is best to determine your face shape before you select a hairstyle. Many celebrities have long shape face. They manage to camouflage the length by sporting perfect hairstyles which help in contouring the face too.

To determine your face shape, you can measure your face length, length of your jaws and the width of your face. If the length from the tip of your big forehead till the tip of your chin is the longest, then you have a long face. Long faces are less wide than they are long. Their rounded edges around the hairline and chin are similar to an oval face, but they are lengthier than an oval face. The forehead, jawline, and cheeks have the same width in an oblong/long face.

Hairstyles for an Oblong Face - Male

Just like females, males also have distinct face shapes. If you are a male and have an oblong face shape, then you need to choose a hairstyle that flatters your face shape too. Like women, you cannot wear your hair long or have long bangs to camouflage the length of your face. But there are certain hairstyles which flatter a long face in males too. You need to get a haircut that shortens the length of your face. A proper haircut for males is best done at a professional salon.

While the best haircut for males with long faces is a side parting with stubble, there are certain other hairstyles which can be created to make the oblong face look shorter:

1. Puffed Bushy Hair:
This kind of hairstyle can be done if the hair texture is more on the frizzy side. This hairstyle suits males who like casual attire and like to dress up in funky clothes.

2. African Braids with/without a bandana:
If you are willing to experiment with different looks, then get your hair braided just like Africans especially if you have a long face. This hairstyle looks cool when you cover your front with a bandana.

3. Rolled Short Hair:
A great hairstyle for casual as well as formal attire, this hairstyle will suit males who have a long face and like to keep their hair long. You need to have a center parting and get your hair in casual waves on both the sides if it is too straight. For a formal look, you can always apply some gel and comb your hair backward.

4. Upward Bangs:
If you like to keep your hair short, then this style is super cool. Males with a long face can wear their hair in upward bangs combed towards the side with a neat side parting.

5. Central Bangs:
This is a tricky hairstyle, and if not done well, it can make your face look longer. You need to cut your hair short on both the sides and leave some length on the front. These front bangs can be styled to fall haphazardly on the top.

6. Top Puffed Look:
Males with frizzy hair can sport this hairstyle, but they also need to sport a beard or a thick stubble to camouflage the length of their long face.

7. Wavy/Curly styling:
Males who have curly or very wavy hair can set their hair in this style. This style requires some blowdry and styling lotions to stay put. You need to make a neat side parting and style away your curls on both the sides.

8. Part Coverage on the forehead with fringes:
This is a funky hairstyle that you can sport for parties and to the disco. Some shaggy fringes are given on the top front to cover your forehead partially.

Males with a long face have totally different hairstyles than females with a long face. While men can sport stubbles and beards to contour their face lengths, women need bangs and waves on their sides to conceal their length. Have a look at some of the images below for hairstyles for men with oblong faces. While this article is specially dedicated to hairstyles for females with long faces, a look at some men styles will help you understand the variation.

7. Curtain Bangs Haircut for a Long Face

Curtain bangs is another great style for an oblong face. In this style, bangs are parted down from the middle of your big forehead and they are cropped at ear's length. This contours the length of your big forehead and also are perfect for silhouetting the longer frame of the face.

8. Short bob haircut for a Long Face Forever in Fashion

A short bob on a long face is a clever combination. The edges of the bob rest at the nape or jawline or even at a couple of inches below the chin. 9. Half-up Messy Curls for a Lady with High Fashion Sense

Angelina Jolie, one of the prettiest woman in Hollywood has always managed to stun everyone with her hairstyles. The rest of her hair had shaggy curls to add some volume on the sides.

10. Curly Hair All the Way for a Long Face

If you have seen Carrie Bradshaw, you have an idea of the hairstyle we are talking about. Carrie Bradshaw flattered her very oblong face with some very voluminous curls that made her face look smaller than what it actually is. This hairstyle is also no maintenance and one can leave their hair open all the time. It is simple and elegant and yet flatters a long face perfectly.

11. Side Ponytail for the Fashion Conscious Women

A fashion conscious female knows that a side ponytail parted on one side will make her hair cut across her big forehead in a diagonal way and also help in altering the shape of her long face. This hairstyle, however, looks good on straight or slightly wavy hair. Women with curly or extra wavy hair will have to straighten their hair from the front to create a slick look.

12. Headband Updo for a Long Face

Although high updos are a big no no for an oblong faced female, sometimes, with some alterations, you can have one too. If you tie up your hair with a headband wrapped around the head, then you can manage to pull off the look. The headband, infact, creates an illusion of width and balances the proportions of the face.

13. Curly Short Bob Haircut for the Fashion Conscious Women

A short bob haircut, just the way Teri Hatcher sported in Desperate Housewife, added width to her long face. She had styled her hair in tight curls and parted her hair to one side. 15. Classic Long Bob Haircut

A classic long bon was recently spotted on Peaches Gedof. She had styled her hair in simple curls at the bottom. This style was more common in the retro era. Women who got a bob hair cut were considered very fashionable women back then. This style still looks good if you have a long face.

16. Short Bob in Straight Hair

Straight hair in a short bob look very elegant and chic. It looks great on people with long face. In fact, many short hairstyles look great on oblong faces. A straightened short bob side swept creates a stylish look.

17. Long Waves Haircut

A long waves haircut on an oblong face is a classic style that never goes out of fashion. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is often seen sporting this hair style. This is also one of the simplest and most common hairstyle. This hairstyle can be worn for an everyday look and looks equally great with a side-sweep or half-way up.

18. Pretty Side Sweep

If you have an oblong face, you can sweep all of your hair on one side and then add some texturized curls to create immense volume on one side of the face. This hairstyle will focus all the attention toyour eyes and the curls and will remove the attention from the length of your face.

19. Wavy Bob Haicut

A wavy bob cut looks cool on Hilary Swank. Her golden locks are cut in a long bob and then styled into some curls to create a very simple and elegant look. The waves add a lot of volume to the sides of the face creating an illusion of a wider face.

20. Slicked Down Center Parting Hairstyle for the Fashion Conscious Women

A very fierce style, slicked down center parting looks really cool on a female with a long face. Style your hair in waves after a center parting and push all the hair behind the ears from the sides to make the oblong face look a little wider.

21. Cut Chopped Bob with Swoopy Bangs

Swoopy bangs cover up your sides and hence balance out the proportions of an oblong face. A cut bob cut paired with these bangs takes the focus away from your long face. A very easy hairstyle, this one requires minimal efforts to style.

22. Asymmetrical Choppy Bob Haircut

This hairstyle is best for a big forehead as it covers it partially.  This hairstyle also adds a lot of dimension and certain amount of texture to your locks. It is best suited for women with thin hair as it adds a lot of volume.

23. Wispy Layers for an Oblong Face

This hairstyle is great for those who love to sport long hair and have a long face. The wispy layers balances your proportions of the face. Keep the rest of the layers long but cut the layers falling on the face shorter to add fullness to your sides.

24. Medium Shaggy Haircut with Long Side Bangs

Shag styles involve adding a lot of layers on the sides. The layers are done in a messy and asymmetrical style which add a lot of volume to your hair. This style also removes the focus from the long face length. A medium shag hairstyle with long bangs on the sides also hides the broad forehead.

25. Long Wavy and Messy Hairstyle

Wear this hairstyle with a side parting. It gives a lot of volume to both the sides of your face thereby balancing the length.

26. Sleek Bob with Cropped and Jagged Bangs

A very stylish and sleek bob, this one has cropped and jagged bangs on the front which reduce the length of the big forehead. This jagged bangs should end just above the eyebrows and start from a little above hairline. The edges of bob should end at the jawline to create an illusion of width on the face.

27. Full-Tousled Layers

A female with a long face can style her hair in full-tousled layers. She can either sweep these layers on one side or balance them equally on both the sides with a not no obvious center parting. The tousled waves creates a illusion of width on the sides and draws the attention to the hair instead of on the face.

28. Side-Parted Cut with Razored Layers

Razor layers is another very trendy style for a female with a long face. The rajor layers look a bit shaggy on the sides and hence create a lot of volume. Sweep these layers onto one side of the face and push the other tresses behind the ear to create an illusion of width. Adding some light highlights on these layers will draw attention to them all the more.

29. Deep Side Part

A deep side parting on straight hair for a female with a long face can be cleverly done by making the parting a little more deeper. The hair falls in a diagonal way to the other end and can be tucked in behind the ear or left loose. This again widens the face.

30. Sliced Layers

Sliced layers on the edges of your shoulder length hair look trendy and chic. They draw all the attention to them instead of on the long face. You can even try some bold highlights on the sliced layers to create a stunning effect in which the attention is drawn to your layers and not on the long face.

Worst Hairstyles for Women with Oblong Face

The following will give you a better idea about which hairstyles you should stay away from if you have a long face. The difference between good and bad is so tiny that it is possible that we make a fashion blunder. Look at the images below and you will get a better idea about which hairstyles you should avoid if you have an oblong face.

31. The hairstyle here could not do any alteration to the long face. By making the bangs a little longer, perhaps the face would appear a little less longer. Also the hair on the sides should be tucked in behind the ears to widen the face or should be styled in some layers.

32. The baby bangs in this hairstyle makes the face look bad and disproportionate. Baby bangs should be avoided on an oblong face. These bangs would have looked better if they were a little longer ending just above the eyebrows.

33. This long faced women is looking longer with this haircut. The short bob  has a lot of volume on the top and less on the sides. There should be more volume on the sides and the top should be left as flat as possible to balance the proportions of a long face.

34. The stringy bangs in this hairstyle do not do anything to hide the big forehead. The fact that they are graduated bangs is creating more harm than any good. This hairstyle is making the face appear longer.

35. This cut is not at all flattering the female. Although the bangs from the top seem fine, the shorter length at the nape is looking bad. It is making her hair look longer. She needs to add some length on the sides to balance her proportions.

36. Again the same issue, the length on the sides is too short and is making the face look longer. The female needs to add some more length on the sides. The side-swept bangs on the front are fine.

37. There are plenty of neat hairstyles for females with long faces. This one is not flattering her face at all and is making her look more masculine.

38. A very unflattering haircut, the model's face looks longer than ever with this hairstyle. She should cut her hair in such a way that her layers and bangs fall at her sides and not on her shoulders.

39. The hairstyle should have been quite the opposite with some volume on the sides and less on the top although the side-swept bangs look fine.

40. A very bad haircut, the lady's face is looking longer than ever. She should have added more volume on the sides and her bangs should  have been longer.

41. The female has very thin and limp hair. She could go in for bangs on her forehead and add a little more layers or bangs on the sides.

In Dec 2016, I got my hair butchered by an inexperienced person. I grew it out for an entire year, but mistakenly flat ironed it to death and lost my curls (because the cut was garbage and I looked ridiculous without styling). Last autumn I asked for the damage to be removed and layers to be cut allowing the curl to come back. Another bad cut. About 8 months of hands off care, with the shorter layers showing my curls finally, you can see what a bad cut does pretty plainly. Everything up front that was barely touched by scissors is still mostly straight. It's heavy and weighing down the rest of my hair, with weird, wispy ends that create frizz. The thing that pisses me off is this place charges $50 a cut and has won prizes for best salon in the area. It's taken me almost 2 years to get my hair back to how I want it and I'm afraid of getting it cut again. My hair is one of the few things I don't ever feel bad about body wise. As a millenial growing up with stick straight hair (and bodies) being the epitome of beauty, I'm pretty happy about letting my untouched normal curl be seen. Except when the salon fucks it up... #badhaircut #naturalcurls #naturalhaircare #noshampoo #alaffia #bakingsoda

42. In the above image, the top image shows how a bad haircut can effect the looks of a pretty woman. She looks pretty in the image below that one. Her side-swept layers add volume to her side of the face and also camouflage her long face. The same woman in a bob cut with more volume on the top appears longer than usual.

Today we are moving into the theatre, so we thought we would introduce you to one of the very important people behind the scenes ofIl Barbiere di Siviglia - our Production Designer Erin Gerofsky. On the left, you see Erin at 14 with a haircut that she DID NOT want. She explains: "Oooohhh boy this is definitely the first time this photo is being shown outside of the small number who have flipped through my photo album with me! I’m about 14 here, we are having dinner at my grandparents house and I was made to remove my hat for this picture, taken about a week after the worst haircut of my life courtesy of my step-mothers hairdresser. It was supposed to be a cute pixie cut with bangs, and some longer tendrils around the face (hey, 2003, what’s happening). I brought copious photo references. It was all going so well. And then, 2/3 of the way through the haircut, she picks up some clippers, says “well let’s not deny you have a cowlick” and buzzes the front of my head. Then the rest of it. Oh god. She gave me a crew cut. I wore a hat for 3 months. Removed only for this photo. Below, you see Erin as her much more glamorous and fashionable self. 43. The graduated bangs do not suit a woman with a long face. They kind of outline the face and make it longer. The bangs could be longer and falling at her eyebrows.

44. Instead of pinning her bangs, the female should let them fall over her big forehead to contour the wide expanse.

45. Although this looks good, the lady could have added some bangs to hide the vast expanse of her big forehead.

46. High ponytails do not look good on women with long faces. It makes their face look even longer.

47. Too much of volume on the top of an oblong face makes the face appear even longer.

48. High bun on an oblong face is a big no no. It creates an illusion of length making the face even more longer than it is.

49. If the lady tried to create a messy bun look, she failed miserably because the bun is making her long face appear longer.

50. Although the bangs on the top are great, they would have been much better with some bangs on the sides too to cut down the length of the face.

The above images can clearly explain the problem with haircuts that do not look good on long face. The idea is simple, to create an illusion of width for the long face in order to balance the proportions. Hence, one needs to look for haircuts that flatter your face shape and not ones which lengthen it. Choose from all the best haircuts given above and steer clear of the worst hairstyles listed above for a long face.
