Who is Roger A. Deakins?
Roger Alexander Deakins was born in 1949 in a small fishing town in England called Torquay. The talented English cinematographer is best known for his work in the films of Coen brothers, Denis Villeneuve and Sam Mendes. Deakins is a member of the British and American Society of Cinematographers. Deakins was honored by the American Society of Cinematographers in 2011 with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was named as the 'Pre-eminent cinematographer of our times' by the president of the American Society of Cinematographers, Richard Crudo. He has done credible work in the British film industry and in recognition of his contribution, Deakins is an honorary fellow of the National Film School in Buckinghamshire of which he is an alumnus. Deakins received a CBE at the Buckingham Palace in 2013 for his 'services to film'. He has also received three BAFTA Awards for Best Cinematography and he has received fourteen nominations until now for the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography. His best known works include, 'The Shawshank Redemption', 'Fargo', 'A Beautiful Mind', 'Skyfall', 'Sicario' and 'Blade Runner 2049'. Roger A. Deakins married script supervisor, Isabella James Purefoy Ellis in 1991. She is better known as James Ellis. He resides in his home county, Devon in southern England. He has spent an entire year in North Devon, documenting the lives in farms and in the villages, before he entered the National Film School in Buckinghamshire. Early life and career
Roger A. Deaker started working as a cameraman, assisting in the production of various documentaries in different locations abroad for roughly seven years, as soon as he completed his graduation. During this seven-year period, his first project was about a nine-month trip as one of the entrants of a 'round-the-world yacht race called 'Around the World with Ridgeway'. This project captured the lives and the tensions between several of the crewmen in the yacht. After completing 'Around the World with Ridgeway', he was hired by television studios to film many documentaries in Africa. His first documentary, Zimbabwe, depicted the genocide happening there and then the subsequent civil war. His second documentary, Eritrea - Behind Enemy Lines, also depicted conflict within the borders of Ethiopia, Sudan and Djibouti. He continued his directional and cinematographic work until the early 80's. He also rapidly flourished during this time in music videos. Roger A. Deakins' first feature film, 'Mountains of the Moon' was in America in 1990 where worked as a cinematographer. He collaborated with the Coen Brothers in 1991 for the film, 'Barton Fink'. Since then, Deakins has been the main cinematic collaborator and also has been their principal cinematographer. The major motion picture, 'The Shawshank Redemption' gave Deakins his first major award from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) for his outstanding achievement in cinematography. The ASC also honored Deakins with outstanding achievement nominations for his later works, including Fargo, O Brother, Kundun, Where Art Thou? and The Man Who Wasn't There for which he also won his second ASC Award. He had done excellent work in the film, 'Sicario' which was a very tricky project to pull off. Deakins was awarded by The U.S. National Board of Review of Motion Pictures for Career Achievement in Cinematography in 2007. He became the first cinematographer in history to receive dual ASC nominations for his works, 'The Assassination of Jesse James' and 'No Country for Old Men'. His film, 'No Country for Old Men' received the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography and he also received an Academy Award nomination for both the films. In 2009, he was double-nominated for the ASC Award again for Revolutionary Road and The Reader. In 2011 he was nominated for his work on 'True Grit' and Deakins received an ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012 he won ASC Award again for outstanding achievement in cinematography for his work on 'Skyfall'. This was his ninth ASC Award nomination and third win! Deakins worked as one of the visual consultants for the Pixar's animated feature 'WALL-E', DreamWorks Animation's, 'How to Train Your Dragon' and Nickelodeon Movies, 'Rango'. He was the director of photography in the film, 'Prisoners' released in 2013. He was nominated with an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his film, 'Prisoners'. Deakins was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2013 Birthday Honours for 'services to film'.
