Marrit Leenstra was born in 1989. She is a Dutch long track speed skater. She made her World cup debut in Moscow at the 2007 season. In 2008, she shot to fame after she made a junior world record in the 1500 m event at the World Cup in Salt Lake City. She even got qualified for the European Championships and was ranked 6th after all four distances. With this result she also qualified for the World Allround. At the World Allround Championships in Berlin, she was placed 12th after four distances. In February 2008, Leenstra got crowned as the World Junior Speed Skating Champion in Changchun, China. At the end of the season in March 2008 she set a new junior world record on the 1000 and 1500 meters and also the mini combination. The latter two are still current junior world records. After an average 2009 season and a disappointing 2010 season, where she failed to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics, she had a major breakthrough 2011 season. Leenstra won the Dutch Allround Championships and was placed third in the European Championships and fourth in the World Allround Championships. Also she was placed fourth in the World Single Distances at the 1000 meters and second in the World Single Distances at the team pursuit and second in the World Cup standings for the 1500 meters, including a World Cup win in Salt Lake City. She won a silver medal in team pursuit at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. She even won a bronze medal in 1500 m at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Leenstra is married to Italian Olympic gold medalist Matteo Anesi.Matteo Anesi was born in 1984. He is an Italian Speed skater who had won a gold medal in the team pursuit at the 2006 Winter Olympics at Turin. He is placed 29th in the 1500 m event at the 2006 Winter Olympics.
