Danai Jekesai Gurira, aged 40 was born on February 14, 1978. Gurira was born in Grinnell, Iowa, United States. She was born to Roger Gurira and Josephine Gurira. Her father, Roger Gurira, was a lecturer in the Chemistry Department, at the Grinnell College. Gurira's mother Josephine Gurira was a librarian at the same college. In the year 1964, her parents moved to the United States from Southern Rhodesia, which is now Zimbabwe. Gurira has two sisters: Shingai Gurira and Chiwoniso Gurira, and one brother: Tare C.Gurira. Danai Gurira is the youngest of her siblings. At the age of 5, Gurira moved back to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. She completed her high school at Dominican Convent High School, Zimbabwe. In 2011, Gurira completed her degree in 'Social Psychology' from the Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota, United States. She then took up an acting course in the Tisch School of the Arts, New York, United States. Gurira acquired her playwriting and acting skills from Liberia in Zimbabwe. Gurira spends a lot of time in New York City but she currently resides in Los Angeles. Gurira is fluent in four languages: French, Shona, basic Xhosa, and English.

With Nikkole Salter she co-authored the play 'In the Continuum' which won her an 'Obie Award'. She also co-starred in the same play and won the 'Outer Critics Circle Award', and a 'Helen Hayes Award' for Best Lead Actress. In the year 2009, Gurira made her debut in the play 'Joe Turner's Come and Gone' featuring Martha Pentecost. In 2012, her play 'The Convert' was co-produced between 'Goodman Theatre' and 'McCarter Theatre'. She won the 'Whiting Award' for her play 'The Convert' for the best emerging playwright. In 2015, her play 'Eclipsed' was starred by Lupita Nyong'o at 'The Public Theatre'. 'Eclipsed' was the first play to premiere all black on Broadway. Later, her play 'Eclipsed' was nominated for the 'Tony Award For Best Play'. But it won the 'Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Play'.
