What to know before you go pastel
Dying your hair any pastel color is a pretty big commitment and investment, especially since it poses a potential risk to your hair, as is always the case when using chemicals like peroxide and toner. Depending on the natural color of your hair, multiple rounds of bleach might be required to achieve that perfect bright pastel hair aesthetic. According to L.A. hair colorist Lorri Goddard, "The first step would be to bleach the hair, and the thing about pre-bleaching hair is that it can get very damaged if it's not done correctly. It's imperative to lift the hair color light enough so the pastel will actually show up. The 'Coachella' colors that have been happening need to be on light-enough hair." So, if you have dark hair, you're going to be dealing with quite a bit of bleach. Adding bleach to already color treated hair causes the risk of your hair being damaged.
If you want to minimize damage to the hair cuticle, try asking your colorist to add a bond builder. A bond builder acts as a barrier and protects your hair during the color process. Your stylist can add it to each round of bleach and toner that they put in your hair, or any treatment to protect the hair cuticle as it's opened and exposed to harsh chemicals, which deplete moisture. Your skin tone may add to the way your pastel pink hair comes out. Danny Moon, a hair colorist says ""Some colors complement cooler skin tones more than warmer tones and vice versa, but it's all fun, especially when [clients] look like they were born with such a magical shade."
Getting your pastel pink hair at home
If you're not in the budget for multiple trips to the salon to achieve your perfect pastel pink hair look, you can try doing it yourself at home. Test a strand of hair first, before committing to your whole head. That way you get a feel for what to do and what not to do before you commit. Use a low volume peroxide- ten or twenty volume- and stay two inches away from the scalp until the rest of your hair is covered in the bleach. Your scalp bleaches the fastest, so save that for last. A lot of people swear by Manic Panic, because the dyes are super vibrant, and they wash out easily.
Manic Panic sells a Pastel-izer, that you can add to any color to make it pastel. It's super affordable at only $9 for a 4oz container. If you're using the Pastel-izer, keep in mind that it works best when you use a whole jar with just a few drops of your pink. It comes ready to use, so it doesn't need to be mixed with any peroxides, plus it conditions your hair. Manic Panic also sells a color kit that comes with all of the things you'll need to dye your hair that gorgeous pastel pink.
Pink pastel hair ideas
Okay, so you've made the decision to dye your hair pastel pink. Lori Goddard mentioned earlier knows that it's easy for color treated hair to die, so she says to "Keep it in great condition, then go in and layer whatever color you choose. It's a classic old Hollywood bleach and tone — the only thing that's different is that you're adding in a pastel color." Los Angeles colorist Danny Moon says, "I suggest bleaching the bottom half of one's head or even a corner. Just something to see peeking through the back," but he knows that changing your hair color is about having fun, and leaves off by saying "Remember, the lighter the color, the more temporary it is, so have fun. Be pastel pink for the weekend and jump on a friend's motorcycle — life is too short to think that natural hair tones are the only colors meant to make you feel like you." Whether you're going to the salon to get your hair dyed, or you're doing it yourself, here are some cool pink pastel hair inspirations to get you started.
