Find out more about Lena Dunham's long-term boyfriend, from his net worth to the songs he helped create and surprising aspects of history.
Fact 1: His Big Break was as 1/3 of the Band Fun.
Let's start with how most of us were probably first introduced to Jack Antonoff. In 2012, the same year that Antonoff would begin dating Lena Dunham, he was part of the band, Fun., and experiencing monster success with their radio single, "We Are Young." Antonoff had joined the band a few years prior after being part of another group called Steel Train. Nate Ruess, lead singer of Fun. who had previous success with a band called The Format, recruited Antonoff and Andrew Dost of Anathello to create a trio with him and they ended up having quite a bit of success. Along with "We Are Young," their album, Some Nights, earned radio hits with the title track and a song called "Carry On" and was eventually nominated for Album of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards. While the album didn't win, Antonoff and the boys did take home the awards for Song of the Year for "We Are Young." Though the band hasn't released any new music since that album, they made it clear they weren't breaking up with a 2015 Facebook post that said, "First and foremost, to answer the question that has been raised most often: Fun. is not breaking up....We make Fun. records when we are super inspired to do so. Currently, Nate is working on his first solo album, Andrew is scoring films, and Jack is on tour and working on Bleachers music. The 3 of us have always followed inspiration wherever it leads us. Sometimes that inspiration leads to Fun. music, sometimes it leads to musical endeavors outside of Fun. We see all of it as part of the ecosystem that makes Fun., fun."
Fact 2: Dunham and Antonoff Have Been Dating Since 2012
In 2012 as Antonoff was at the height of success with Fun., Lena Dunham was riding the wave of her breakthrough role as the star and creator of HBO's Girls. Dunham has been a polarizing figure throughout her short career and Girls was no exception, but it did garner her a number of Emmy nominations and a swell of critical attention. Dunham has also acquired a net worth of $12 million. Jack Antonoff had lived in New Jersey his entire life before moving to the Upper West Side of New York City with his sister, Rachel, in 2012. It wasn't long before he met Dunham, the two hit it off and were living together by the end of the year and they've been dating ever since. Dunham's parents are Carroll Dunham, a respected painted, and Laurie Simmons, an artist and photographer and they are related to the famous Tiffany family of fancy jewelry fame. She's lived in Brooklyn her whole life. Antonoff and Dunham made it known publicly that they would not get married until gay marriage became legal in the United States. Naturally, after that happened, people were beginning to ask when the two were going to tie the knot. Dunham explained in a 2015 interview with Ellen Degeneres that while they were open to it now that gay marriage had been legalized, and they were now waiting for the moment that was right for them.
Fact 3: Antonoff's High School Sweetheart Was Scarlett Johansson
It turns out that Lena Dunham isn't the only famous girlfriend Jack Antonoff has had. Antonoff grew up with his parents, Shira and Rick Antonoff, in Bergenfield, New Jersey. For high school, he and his sister would commute to Manhattan to attend Professional Childrens' School. While attending the school, he actually dated future movie star, Scarlett Johansson, for a while. This was a fact that Antonoff had never mentioned to Dunham who said she found it out while browsing the Tumblr blog, Old Loves. At first, Dunham says that she thought she was hallucinating but that she couldn't deny that her boyfriend in the pictures. Some girlfriends would be jealous if they found out their boyfriend had dated Scarlett Johansson, but Dunham says, "I'm not jealous. It's very sweet. I love looking at pictures of them." For what it's worth, Dunham is on record as having grown up with crushes on Jimmy Fallon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto...but she never actually dated any of them.
Fact 4: Antonoff Has Worked with Some of Music's Biggest Artists
With a net worth of $4 million, Jack Antonoff has reached beyond his own projects and worked with some of the biggest names in music. In fact, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that Antonoff has a bit of a magic touch as some of his songs have gone on to be huge hits for Zayn, Pink and Sara Bareilles with whom he wrote "Brave." He also co-executive produced Lorde's latest album, Melodrama, with her and it's now been nominated for Album of the Year. If Melodrama ends up winning that top honor at the Grammys, it won't be a first for Antonoff who was one of the producers on Taylor Swift's album, 1989. He's also co-written several songs with Taylor Swift, including "Out of the Woods," "I Wish You Would" and her new hit, "Look What You Made Me Do." Collaborating with Taylor Swift makes sense for Antonoff as she's good friends with both him and Lena Dunham. In fact, Dunham even made an appearance in Swift's star-studded "Bad Blood" music video.
Fact 5: Jack Antonoff is the Lead Singer of Bleachers
Jack Antonoff seems to possess an effortless pop sensibility but there's also an undercurrent of melancholy in a lot of his music. This is likely as a result of a tragedy he experienced at a young age. His parents had three children but when Antonoff was 13, his younger sister, Sarah, died of brain cancer and Antonoff once said: "my whole career has been revisiting that through a different lens." Antonoff and his other sister, fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, remain very close and they actually lived together briefly when he first moved to New York. With his band, Bleachers, Antonoff is able to pour more of himself into his music than with any other project. There's sadness and hope mixed with riffing guitars and infectious synth beats and while he has done tremendous work with other artists, it might be fair to say he does even better work leading his own band. If you've never checked out the band fronted by Lena Dunham's boyfriend, "I Wanna Get Better" from their debut album and "Don't Take The Money" from 2016's Gone Now are a good place to start.
