Baby swiming in diapers

Do you plan on taking your baby for a dip one of these days? Well, you should know that public pools often have rules about children in diapers, the main concern is the spread of nastiness, germs, and disease through poop. So YES - you do need diapers in a public pool, and No - regular diapers won’t do the trick. Regular diapers are absorbent and will get soaked when submerged in water. While swimming diapers do not contain water crystals (sodium polyacrylate) the stuff that makes diapers absorbent, so they do not get soaked in water. Swim diapers are designed to contain solids and withstand water.

There are two kinds of swim diapers, disposable and reusable swim diapers. They both have their advantages and inconveniences. Disposable diapers are cheaper and easy to use, all you have to do is to throw them away when you’re done. On the flip side, they can become saggy and slip out. Reusable diapers, on the other hand, are usually tight fitting, more expensive and require more attention after using them. It’s up to you to choose the version that suits you best.  How to gauge the size of swim diapers

Baby relaxing in a pool

To get the desired results, you must get diapers that fit, that are not too tight nor too loose. If it’s too large, the elastics around the legs will be too weak and it will become weak and lose its content. If it’s too small, it will be too tight causing your baby discomfort. With the correct size, the diaper will fit snuggly, sizes are available from Newborn to toddlers depending on their weight.

Even though sizes are usually mentioned on swim diapers, the only way to be certain is to measure your baby’s waist and thighs and compare them with what is on the diapers. Some babies might be chubbier around the waist and the legs than their weight suggest or are taller and slender. So always be sure of the measurements before purchasing diapers, especially reusable versions as you will be using them for a while.

How do baby swim diapers work

Baby swim diapers are unique in that they do not contain water crystals, (sodium polyacrylate) like regular diapers. While normal diapers are made to absorb and contain liquid, swim diapers are special, they do not absorb liquids, their sole purpose is to contain solids, that’s why swim diapers won’t prevent pee from leaking out. Swim diapers have no absorbing layer, it has elastics on the thighs and snaps at the sides to provide extra protection. It is recommended for babies that are not yet potty trained.

How to use a baby swim diaper

Happy swimming baby

Using swim diapers is not very different from using normal diapers, it takes a few attempts to get a hang of it but once you have it becomes easy. Here are a few tips to take note of when using swim diapers.

  • When you wear your baby swim diapers, make sure you check every 30 minutes to 1 hour to see if it is soiled.

  • When it is soiled, if you are using disposables, you should just take it off and toss in the trash. But in case you are going for reusable diapers, you have to empty the diaper in the toilet, rinse it to get rid of its content, chlorine, sea salt and sand if you are at the beach, then put it in a washing machine.

  • If you opt for disposable diapers, make sure you carry a few extras, just in case you need to change your little one more than once.

Conclusion

Baby swimming in a pool

Swim diapers are a must if you plan on taking your baby swimming in a public pool, but the choice of either disposable or reusable diapers is entirely up to you.  If you intend on going swimming regularly, you should opt for reusable diapers but if your baby is a once in a blue moon kind of swimmer then you’re better off with disposables. Another option is to use disposable diapers underneath and reusables on top for double protection.
