When he graduated from college in 1999 John Legend began producing, writing, and recording his own music. His first two albums, his self-titled demo and Live at Jimmy's Uptown, were released independently. In 2001, John Legend was introduced to then up-and-coming hip-hop artist Kanye West by Devo Springsteen and Kanye hired Legend to sing during the hooks of his songs. Shortly after signing to West's label, he chose his stage name John Legend from an idea that was given to him by poet J. Ivy, who told John that his sound was an "old-school sound," like one of the legends. John Legend has most recently appeared in the film La La Land, alongside actress Emma Stone. He also performed a rendition of the theme song from Beauty and the Beast with Ariana Grande for the remake of the film.
