Grace and Christopher Jackman divorced when Hugh Jackman was only 8 years old. Hugh Jackman remained in Australia with his father and his two brothers, while Jackman's two sisters moved back to England with his mother. Jackman studied at the University of Technology, Sydney, graduating with a BA in Communications in 1991, after receiving his BA, Jackman completed the one-year course "The Journey" at the Actors' Centre in Sydney. Jackman turned down a role on the popular soap opera "Neighbours," but turned it down to attend the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts of Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, where he graduated in 1994. This was Hugh Jackman's first major professional job and also where he met his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.
Hugh Jackman: The Wolverine
After a handful of roles throughout the 1990's, including a performance in "Oklahoma!" that earned him an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical in 1998. This helped Jackman become well known outside of Australia and in 2000, his massive breakthrough came when he was cast as Wolverine in X-Men. This role would change the trajectory of his life and career as an actor. Jackman was the perfect fit for Logan, a mutant known as Wolverine who is amongst a group of superheroes with superpowers that aren't trusted by normal humans. The role for Wolverine was originally written for fellow Australian actor, Russel Crowe who instead suggested Hugh Jackman for the part. Jackman is also quoted as saying that his wife advised him against taking on the role as Logan, because she found it to be "ridiculous." X-Men was the movie for Marvel Comics that started the trend that would take over the world over the next 2 decades. X-Men was very successful at the box-office, earning $296 million dollars. Jackman would later reprise his role as Wolverine in X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and the 2009 prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Hugh Jackman had a cameo as Wolverine in X-Men: First Class and he returned for the role of Wolverine again in The Wolverine, a stand-alone sequel taking place after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, and reprised the character in the sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past and the follow-up X-Men: Apocalypse. In 2015, Jackman announced that the 2017 sequel to The Wolverine, Logan, was the final time that he would play the role. Hugh Jackman played Wolverine in nine different X-Men films. For one time, he can tell his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness that she was wrong. He can also thank Russell Crowe for referring Jackman for the role, as it was life-changing. Jackman was actually offered the role of James Bond, before Daniel Craig and Hugh decided that he didn't want to play James Bond and Wolverine at the same time, considering that both roles were so massive. Jackman is obviously a man of great integrity who takes his craft as an actor very seriously, because there are not many actors who turn down a role as James Bond just because they already had a massive role as another larger than life character.
