Greta Gerwig: Bio & Early Life
Greta Gerwig is an American writer, actress, and director who has most recently gained fame for her work directing 'Lady Bird.' Greta Gerwig was born on August 4, 1983, in Sacramento, California. She is the daughter of an OB-GYN nurse named Christine, and Gordon Gerwig, who worked for a credit union on small business loans. She has one younger brother who is a landscape architect. Greta is of German, Irish, and English ancestry. She was raised as a Unitarian Universalist and earned her early education at St. Francis High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Sacramento. Greta describes herself as having been an intense kid, with an early interest in dancing. Her first dreams were to earn a degree in musical theatre in New York and become a playwright. However, she was denied admittance to the playwright MFA program and ended up graduating from Barnard College in New York with a degree in English and philosophy. Greta turned to acting while still a student at Barnard. In 2006 she was cast in a minor role in Joe Swanberg's 'LOL' and also appeared in 'Baghead' by Jay and Mark Duplass. She and Swanberg started a partnership shortly after this, which resulted in the duo co-writing 'Hannah Takes the Stairs' and sharing both writing and directing duties on 'Nights and Weekends.' These two films gained her some recognition, and she became known as a key figure in the rising mumblecore film movement, a subgenre of independent films characterized by an emphasis on dialogue over plot, and a focus on the personal relationships of people in their 20s and 30s. She is often referred to as an "It girl" within this movement.
