They soon teamed up as writing partners and started writing comedy together in their spare time. The duo wrote a screenplay based on a failed relationship that Neustadter experienced. Weber and Neustadter came out publicly as screenwriters in 2006 when they successfully sold their spec script, '500 Days of Summer' to Fox Searchlight Pictures. While their movie was still in pre-production, Weber and Neustadter were asked by Sony Pictures to write 'The Pink Panther 2' which was supposed to be a sequel to 'the Pink Panther' of 2006. This was in turn a reboot of the original Pink Panther franchise. Weber and Neustadter had initially declined the offer but later agreed when their managers stressed on the importance of the movie to be made. Both these movies, '500 Days of Summer' and 'The Pink Panther 2' were released in 2009. The movie, '500 Days of Summer' was lauded by the critics and audiences alike and was also the highest grossing film of the year by Fox Searchlight. It received numerous awards and accolades like the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay and also a Writers Guild of American Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Weber and Neustadter developed a television sitcom for ABC called 'Friends with Benefits' in 2009. The project was later taken up by NBC and it was first premiered in August, 2011. Weber and Neustadter later adapted Tim Tharp's novel, 'The Spectacular Now' into a film of the same name, a romantic drama about high school students and alcoholism. Weber and Neustadter were commissioned to write the screenplay in 2009 by Fox Searchlight, who had produced their first script, '500 Days of Summer', but the film got stuck in pre-production for several years before it was picked up to be made by by director James Ponsoldt. The film was finally released in August 2013 to almost universally positive critical reviews. They got a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay and the film itself won a National Board of Review award for Best Independent Film. The film was released in 2014 and it received positive reviews and performed well at the box office. They later adapted another Green book, 'Paper Towns', into a film of the same name.
