An interesting interview with Laura Checkoway

Lara met a headstrong and defiant girl named Lucky Torres who had a story to tell her. The story later became the famous documentary, 'Lucky'. As a child, Lucky suffered many years of abuse and had to spend her childhood in foster care before she began running from girlfriend to girlfriend. Laura became interested in Lucky‘s life as her world evolved like a roller coaster. 'Lucky' is a compelling film about a powerful young woman who prevented her son and sister from drowning in a sea of uncertainty despite being homeless and unemployed and with all the proud scars to show for it. Here is short interview taken with Laura Checkoway on her documentary film, 'Lucky'. The interviewer asked her whether she was concerned about not being able to finish the film or get complete matter from the girl to make a story out of it since her first intention was only to write an article and not to make a film. She replied that she would have kept on going on with the story until she felt that she had done justice to the girl. In her film, there is no happy ending for Lucky but she has some hopes as a mother and a person. Laura was asked whether she had any personal hopes for Lucky to which she replied that Laura was always hopeful for a better life for Lucky and still is. She sincerely hopes that Lucky finds herself a good and meaningful life and a good career. Laura was also asked that if she were a man and making this film, then would Lucky open up so much as she did to her to which she replied that definitely being of the same gender helped Lucky open up with trust and confidence in her. Laura Checkoway was indeed intrigued by the questions put up to her by the interview. She said that the questions made her think more as a filmmaker. She also mentioned that she had financed the film herself with the help of producer Neyda Martinez. She mentioned that she has just started her career in filmmaking and was not prepared for the kind of response her film got. When asked about how was the response to the film at screenings, she said, "The audience has a really powerful response to the film and it sparks a lot of conversation. At screenings, Lucky is applauded and admired for her strength and audiences have expressed a lot of gratitude to her for sharing her story and her pain. It’s a lot for Lucky to take in and there have been ups and downs but for the most part she’s handled it like the leader and eloquent speaker that she is… she’s so authentically herself."
