Rachel Morrison eventually set her sights on cinematography. After Rachel Morrison finished at NYU she attended the AFI Conservatory and completed a Masters degree in fine arts. Rachel Morrison debut film was a documentary that aired on television. Then she jumped to other independent works like Palo Alto. After Palo Alto, she worked on the famous reality show The Hills. Most of the films Rachel Morrison worked on debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. Rachel Morrison photographed Cake by Dan Barnz and then Dope. Rachel Morrison also worked on Fruitvale Station and Sound of My Voice. Rachel Morrisons first chance to direct was for an episode of the television show American Crime. Rachel Morrison was the first woman to win the Award for Best Cinemaphotographer via the New York Film Critics for her movie Mudbound. Mudbound also got Rachel Morrison a nomination for outstanding achievement and nominated for an Oscar for Best Cinematography. It’s everything women do well, I think,” she said. “I could never quite understand why there aren’t more of us.” “I just hope that they’re patient and persistent,” Morrison said, “so when we get to the next level, you’ll see just as many women DPs and as there are men. And maybe someday we can stop referring to them as women DPs because they’ll be closer to a 50-50 representation.” “One of the things I think is pretty common for most cinematographers is we like to fade into the background. We’re behind the camera for a reason,” she said. “So I’ve had to get over my fear of public speaking and accept that I’m going to have terrible pictures of me all over the internet and be OK with it.”

Mudbound
Mudbound is a period piece that is set at the end of World War Two. It shows the story of two soldiers returning home to the south, one black and one white. Though the location they live is the same, and the place and experiences they had were similar, the way they were treated in the racist south when they returned led to even more struggles. The story follows both of their journies on dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and racism. Featured in Mudbound: Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, and Mary J.
