Career as a Sound Designer

Glen Gauthier's career as a sound designer began in 1978 when he worked on films: "The Silent Partner." When Gauthier worked on this film, he was a re-recording editor, but throughout the course of his career, he has worked in various roles within sound departments. Throughout the 1980's, Gauthier took on various roles in the sound departments he worked in. Some of the jobs he included sound editor, dialogue editor, boom operator, and production sound. It was also in this decade that Gauthier started to work on films with larger budgets. Some of these films were "A Christmas Story," and "Parenthood." In the 1990's, Gauthier spent roughly the first half of the decade working as a boom operator and the second half working as a sound mixer. During this decade, he did not work on many extremely popular movies, but he did work with the television show "Avonlea" for several years.

In the 2000's, Gauthier began to have a reputation for working on an awkward combination of movies: action and children/family features. He worked on films that ranged from "A History of Violence" to "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl." Some of the other films he worked on in this decade include "The Pacifier," "Four Brothers," and "Killshot." Some of Gauthier's most popular films are also some of his most recent--all coming from the 2010's. He's most recently worked on the films "Pacific Rim," "Poltergeist," "Spotlight," "Robocop," "xXx: Return of Xander Cage," "It," and "The Shape of Water." In most of his most recent films, including "Spotlight," and "Pacific Rim," he has worked in the role of a primary sound mixer.

Awards and Nominations

Even though Gauthier has been working in film since the 1970's, it wasn't until the 1980's that he began winning awards. Some of his earliest awards for sound design include "Ticket to Heaven," and "The Terry Fox Story." Most recently, Glen Gauthier has been in the spotlight for his work on the film "The Shape of Water" is currently nominated for an Oscar 2018 award for his work on this film.
