Gregg Landaker is a second generation sound designer

Born in 1951, Gregg was born into a sound design family. He worked early on cleaning film at Disney Studios, eventually working his way up to run the dub stage machine room. This led him to mixing film for Goldwyn Studios and Universal, before finding his ultimate role as a sound designer at Warner Bros. Studios, working on films such as 'The LEGO Batman Movie,' 'The Conjuring 2' and 'Godzilla.'

Gregg Landaker's career has spanned over 39 years from 1979 to the present day. In addition to the Oscar-nominated films he has worked on, he has also worked as sound designer on the films 'Godzilla', 'The Conjuring 2,' 'The LEGO Batman Movie,' 'The Godfather: Part III' and 'Ordinary People.'

Gregg Landaker has won Best Sound Academy Awards for 'The Empire Strikes Back,' 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'Speed.' With those three wins came 6 additional nominations for Academy Awards for the films 'JFK,' 'Waterworld,' 'Twister,' 'U-571,' 'Interstellar' and the Oscar 2018 nominated 'Dunkirk.' All of his films were critically acclaimed, but Interstellar has faced controversy for its sound design amid it's Oscar nomination. Many believed the sound was too loud during key dialogue in the movie. However, Christopher Nolan has since defended the sound choices, calling them intentional and arguing "I don't agree with the idea that you can only achieve clarity through dialogue."

The 2018 Academy Awards could see his 4th win for Best Sound for Dunkirk

The Oscar 2018 nomination of Dunkirk for Best Sound Mixing is one of 8 total nominations for the film, falling second only to Guillermo del Toro's 'The Shape of Water.' Other nominations for 'Dunkirk' include Best Picture, Best Director, Cinematography and Film Editing. 'Dunkirk' has had a great public reception, receiving 38 awards since 2017, in categories like Best Director, Best Picture, Sound Mixing and Film Editing. Most recently, 'Dunkirk' won Best Sound at the 2018 BAFTA Awards.

Dunkirk was his 207th and last film as a sound designer

In a surprise turn of events, Gregg Landaker announced his upcoming retirement in 2018 after his role as sound designer in Dunkirk. However, Gregg has claimed sources such as Christopher Nolan and Prince William have urged him out of retirement already. His reply: "If you make the phone call, I will consider it." So while Dunkirk was seemingly his last film as a sound designer, we may not have seen the last of Gregg Landaker.
