Slate grew up in the suburbs of Boston, with older sister Abigail and younger sister Stacey. She was the valedictorian of her high school class and then moved on to Columbia University where she studied literature. At Columbia, she and Gabe Liedman created an improv group called Fruit Paunch. After graduating in 2004, the pair created a duo comedy act called ‘Gabe & Jenny.’ ‘Gabe & Jenny’ continued until 2008, when they decided to split up the act due to busy schedules. Slate performed her one woman show, ‘Jenny Slate: Dead Millionaire” at the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) theater in New York during the following year. Performing at UCB coupled with appearances in sketches on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ landed her a spot in the ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast of 2009.

'Saturday Night Live'

Slate joined ‘Saturday Night Live’ for the 2009-2010 season. Unfortunately, her time on the show was marred when she accidentally dropped an f-bomb during a live performance. While on 'Saturday Night Live' she impersonated several celebrities including Lady Gaga, Kristen Stewart and Ashley Olsen, as well as playing Tina-Tina Cheneuse in her own new sketch.

'Marcel the Shell with Shoes On'

In 2010, Slate co-wrote an animated short called ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ with Dean Fleischer-Camp. The stop motion film went viral online, and led them to create a sequel, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Two.’ The whole concept of the short is that Marcel is a shell who is being interviewed by a documentary crew. Fleischer-Camp directed and produced, while Slate also voiced Marcel. The film was an official selection at Sundance Film Festival in 2011. Two ‘Marcel’ themed children’s book were also released, along with a third short in 2014. Slate and Fleischer-Camp were married in 2012, but split in 2016. Slate has said that they had an amicable break-up, and they are still working on a ‘Marcel’ themed feature film.

Film Roles and 'Parks and Recreation

Her first major film role was in ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,’ in which she did more voice over acting. Slate’s next role came in 2012, when she voiced Ted’s Mom in ‘The Lorax.’ She also got another voice over part on ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ on which she plays Tammy. Slate’s move to live action came in 2013 when she joined the cast of ‘Parks and Recreation’ as Mona-Lisa Saperstein, the sister to irresponsible playboy Jean-Ralphio. Mona-Lisa is a bratty party girl who continued to have a side role in the show until its end in 2015. Slate was able to gain much more mainstream notoriety from her role in ‘Parks and Rec,’ and her career continued to grow during those years.

'Obvious Child' and More Success

2013 brought appearances on ‘House of Lies’ and ‘The Kroll Show,’ but it was not until 2014 that Slate caught her biggest break. She starred in the film ‘Obvious Child’ a romantic comedy about abortion that won several awards and became well known. Written and directed the Gillian Robespierre, ‘Obvious Child’ premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was well received by critics. Slate’s performance was the highlight of the film, and earned her a nomination for a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Actress in a Comedy, which she won. She continues to take television parts as well as larger film roles. In 2014, she began playing Jess on ‘Married,’ she had a small part in HBO’s ‘Girls,’ and she has a voice over role on Netflix’s ‘Big Mouth.’ Her raspy voice has become one of her trademarks, and makes her especially distinguishable in animated projects.

'Zootopia' and 'The Secret Life of Pets'

In 2016, she returned to animated film with ‘Zootopia.’ The Disney film is about a city of animals and it also starred Idris Elba, Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman. It was extremely successful, and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2017. In 2016, she voiced Gidget in ‘The Secret Life of Pets,’ another successful animated film where she starred alongside Kevin Hart, Hannibal Buress and Ellie Kemper. A sequel is currently in production, called ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2,’ which is expected to be released in 2019. 2017 also brought about her second collaboration with Gillian Robespierre, this time in a family dramedy called ‘Landline.’ The film also stars Jay Duplass and Edie Falco, with Robespierre once again writing and directing. ‘Landline’ did not become quite as sensational as ‘Obvious Child’ and was released as an Amazon Original.

'Gifted' and Becoming Chris Evans' Girlfriend

Shortly after, Slate starred in ‘Gifted,’ she met Chris Evans. The two soon began dating and were together until a split in February of 2017. It was recently reported that she is officially once again his girlfriend after the two exchanged some flirty tweets online and met up for dinner in Atlanta during production of the next ‘Avengers’ film.

'Venom' and Net Worth

Slate’s 2018 net worth is $1 million. In 2018, Slate will join Evans in the Marvel family with the new film ‘Venom.’ The film stars Tom Hardy as the titular Venom, Michelle Williams and Woody Harrelson. Not much is known about Slate’s role in the film.
