Who is Darya Domracheva?

Dárya Vladímirovna Dómracheva was born in 1986. She is a Belarusian biathlete who has been competing in the Biathlon World Cup since 2006. She won a gold medal in the 4 x 6 km relay and a silver medal in the mass start competition at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, three gold medals in the pursuit, individual, and mass start competitions at the 2014 Winter Olympics, and a bronze medal in the individual competition at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was also a Biathlon World Cup overall winner for the 2014–15 season. Domracheva is nicknamed as Dasha by her friends and family. She loves dancing, listening to music, snowboarding, travelling, design, painting in her spare time. Her husband is Ole Einar Bjorndalen. She has a daughter Xenia born in 2016 with her husband Ole Einar Bjorndalen. Domracheva can speak English and Russian languages. She trained in the club Dynamo under coaches Alfred Eder, Fyodor Svoboda and Yury Albers. Her husband Ole Einar Bjorndalen has won 13 medals in biathlon at the Olympic Winter Games for Norway, making him the most celebrated athlete in the history of the winter Games. In 2013 her niece [also named Darya] became Belarus junior champion in artistic gymnastics at age eight. Domracheva made her World Cup Debut - 2006 in Ostersund, Sweden. She was suffering from glandular fever [mononucleosis] in 2015/16 that caused her to stay out of the entire season. She returned to sports in January 2017 after a 21-month competitive break that also included pregnancy and the birth of her daughter in October 2016. She began competing in the biathlon in 1999 in Nyagan, Russian Federation because she first tried cross-country skiing, but then she made the switch to biathlon when a school dedicated to the sport opened in her hometown. She was named as the 2014 European Sportswoman of the Year by the European branch of the International Sports Press Association. After winning her third gold medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, she was named Hero of Belarus, which is the country's highest honor. In 2010 she was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sport in Belarus. She was also named the 2010 Female Athlete of the Year in Belarus. After missing the 2015/16 season due to her fever, in April 2016 it was announced that she and partner Ole Einar Bjorndalen were expecting their first child. She gave birth to daughter Xenia in October 2016, and returned to the World Cup in January 2017 after a break of 21 months. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, she became the first female biathlete to ever win three gold medals at a single Olympic Winter Games. When she was a young child, she moved to the Russian Federation as her father's work commitments demanded so. After representing the Russian Federation at youth level, she was offered to represent Belarus at junior level in 2004, and so she moved to Minsk to train with the national squad. In September 2016 she launched her own clothing brand which came as a surprise to everyone. She said in an interview, "I always liked to brainstorm and to develop my creative ideas. My parents are architects, and because of them I became interested in art, therefore, it does not come as a surprise that I am very fond of design in general. But why did I decide to design clothes? Maybe, because such collections could become a present for my fans, who missed me in biathlon. I wanted to add to my training outfit something personal. Besides, it was important to me to create something that would motivate people to do sports, to beat their personal records."

Career of the biathlete

Domracheva began her decorated sports career with cross-country skiing in 1992 but switched to biathlon in 1999. She originally represented Russia at the youth level but received an offer to switch to Belarus in 2004. She joined Belarus’ national biathlon team in 2006 and has been a participant of the Biathlon World Cup since 2006. Domracheva won sprint and pursuit at the 2005 IBU Youth and Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti (Finland). Domracheva got bronze medal in pursuit and 4th place in the individual events at the 2006 Junior World Championships in Presque Isle, Maine. In 2007, she won two silver medals in sprint and pursuit at the Junior World Championships in Martell, Italy. Her major breakthrough came during the 2008/2009 season when she earned two bronze medals and one silver medal. At the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, she won the bronze medal in the Women's 15-kilometer individual race at the Whistler Olympic Park venue. She also won her first World Cup race in the sprint in Kontiolahti, Finland. The next day she also won the pursuit. Domracheva won the Pursuit World Cup 2011–2012 and won the Mass Start World Cup 2011–2012. In the 2010–2011 season Domracheva won the Mass Start World Cup. Her biggest achievement was in the 2014–2015 when was Domracheva won the Overall World Cup title with 1092 points. She also won the Sprint World Cup title in that season. In the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, Domracheva won a gold medal in 4 x 6 km relay and a silver medal in the 12.5 km mass start and did her country proud again with her achievements.
