Who is Oleksandr Abramenko?
Oleksandr Abramenko was born in 1988 in Pervomaiskyi. He is a Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist freestyle skier who specializes in aerials. Abramenko is the 2015–16 Aerials World Cup winner. He also competed at the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018 Olympic Winter Games, winning the Olympic gold medal in the men's aerials event at 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Abramenko's father is Oleksandr Volodymyr Abramenko. He is a former footballer who played for a few amateur teams in Ukraine and currently is a security officer at MFC Mykolaiv. Abramenko was not quite famous in the Olympic World circuit until the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, when he got his country its first Olympic Gold medal and also his first. He is nicknamed as Sasha by his friends and family. Abramenko loves to indulge in wakeboarding apart from skiing. The athlete has done his graduation from the Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding in Mykolayiv in Ukraine. Abramenko's partner is Alexandra Orlova. Career of the skier
Abramenko competed in the 2005 World Championships in Ruka, Finland, where he was placed 25th. He also competed at six World Championshipss, and his best result was in 2009, when he was placed fifth. In Abramenko's World Cup debut on January 8, 2006, in Mont Gabriel, Canada, he placed eighteenth. He competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy although he was young and inexperienced. Abramenko won a silver medal at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Krasnoe Ozero, Russia. On January 19, 2008, Abramenko placed tenth at the World Cup event in Lake Placid, United States and also managed to be among the best in four of seven competitions that season. Abramenko competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, for Ukraine. In men's aerials, he finished 24th in the qualifying round of the event, and failed to move ahead to finals. His first World Cup podium was claimed in February of 2012, in Minsk, Belarus, when he came second after another Ukrainian Stanislav Kravchuk. In 2014, he reached the final and placed 6th. His first victory came on March 1, 2015, in Minsk, Belarus. In 2015-16 season he became the first ever Ukrainian to win World Cup in aerials or any other freestyle discipline. This was the major breakthrough for the 2015-16 Aerials World Cup winner. In summer 2016, Abramenko suffered a severe injury. While practicing on water, he injured his cruciate ligaments and his meniscus and transverse ligament. As a result of the injury, he could not compete in the entire next season and also missed the 2017 World Championships. He returned in good spirits and form to participate in the pre-Olympic 2017-18 season. Abramenko started that season on an average note finishing just 21th in Beijing, China. But later his performances improved and soon he achieved his eighth podium in Lake Placid, United States. He then became a promising candidate for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Abramenko became the second native of Ukraine to win an Olympic gold in freestyle after Anton Kushnir. Oleksandr Abrammenko won gold medal in the men’s aerials with a score of 128.51, claiming Ukraine’s first-ever medal in freestyle skiing in his fourth Olympics.
