Recent stint at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games

Suzanne Schulting is most remembered for her triumph in the 1000 m event in speed skating at the Olympics. Holland has garnered seven gold medals and hers includes one in the list. The Netherlands dominate long track speed skating in a way that few other nations dominate any other sport. But Schulting made history this year by topping the podium, the Dutch had never won a gold medal in short track speed skating. Schulting is a Groningen native and comes from a sporting family. Her father was a soccer player and she herself has been in the sport since she was eight. The PyeongChang Games are the first time she’s competed at Olympic level and she also won a bronze medal in the 3,000 meter relay earlier in the Games in addition to her gold medal. Suzanne Schulting won the Netherlands first-ever short track gold medal. "I really can't believe it. It's incredible that it just happened today. I was just enjoying the final at first and I think that's why I won the gold, because I was enjoying it so much," Schulting said to the media. Schulting finished in the third place in the 1000m at last season’s World Championships and placed second in the 1500m World Cup standings. The Netherlands are a long track speed skating power house, but have not had the same success in short track. "Short track six years ago was at the bottom and now we are climbing so fast," Schulting said after the race. "You know, I think I want to inspire all those young kids to do short track as well and make short track as big as long track is in Holland."

An interview with the winning lady

The winning Olympian was recently interviewed. It is fun to get a sneak peek into the lives of these celebrities and to know about their opinions on diverse subjects. The interviewer asked her that as long track speed skating is really big in the Netherlands, then how come she ended up with Short track speed skating to which she replied, "I started the same age as Sjinkie, but also through normal skating just to learn. After that I was going to do long track and my coach said, “You could also do some Short Track to learn to skate good corners. So I started Short Track and was really excited about it, and I’m still here. The same as Sjinkie, really. I love Short Track because of the excitement; we are racing against each other and fast people. I think that is really cool." He also asked her that with the World Championships, how is she involved in promoting the sport in the Netherlands, and she replied, "The World Championships is going to be a party and everyone is invited and can come and see us. I think it is going to be really great, just like the World Cup and the European Championships."
