Who is Kelsey Serwa?
Kelsey Serwa was born in 1989. She is a Canadian freestyle skier who is a member of the Canadian national ski cross team. She won a gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang and a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She is the 2011 FIS World Champion and two times Winter X Games champion. In addition, she has won a bronze medal at the 2010 X Games. Serwa is nicknamed as K-Ser by her friends. She enjoys Blogging, cycling, paddle boarding, yoga, surfing, camping. The athlete has studied Biokinetics, Physiotherapy from Okanagan College [CAN] / University of British Columbia Okanagan [CAN]. She can speak English language. Serwa trained in the club Big White Ski Club in Canada under coach Stanley Hayer. In the 1960s her grandfather, Cliff co-founded the Big White Ski Resort in Kelowna, BC, Canada. She was on Canada's alpine skiing development teams before switching to ski cross. Serwa made her World Cup Debut - 2009. In December 2016, she damaged the cartilage in her knee after overshooting a jump in training. She required surgery and was unable to compete for the rest of the 2016/2017 season. In March 2013 she tore the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in her left knee. She had injured the same knee in 2012 while training in Norway. Her recovery took six months and she took the entire 2014/2015 season off to allow for a full recovery. In January 2012 she ruptured the ACL in her left knee at a World Cup race in Alpe d'Huez, France. The injury occurred after she got tangled up in another skier's pole. She did everything she could to help the healing process, which included buying a new mattress and having sessions in a hyperbaric [high pressure] chamber. At the 2011 Winter X Games in Aspen, CO, United States of America, she had injured her back, thumb and ribs after she crashed on the line. She still won the event. She also had a series of minor injuries up until 2010, which included a broken wrist, a fractured and bruised heel, bruised ribs, a bruised lung and concussion. She began freestyle skiing at age two but later took up ski cross at age 18 because she used to be a member of the Canadian national ski cross team for alpine skiing. She switched to ski cross after hearing it would be a new event at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Serwa regards the Canadian freestyle skier Kristi Richards as her hero and credits her biggest influence to her brother and sister. Serwa has a strange ritual which she follows religiously before each of her events. She taps her poles twice before getting in the start gate to focus her mind on the race, and keeps a silver dollar sewn in her racing suit. She believes in the philosophy "Believe in the power of your dreams." Serwa was named the 2009 Rookie of the Year by the International Ski Federation [FIS]. She began freestyle skiing at the Big White Racers Club in Kelowna, BC, Canada. Her father had done some work digging a basement for the new club cabin, but it wasn't until the job was finished that the club admitted they didn't have any money to pay him. A deal was struck where the club offered a 'free' year in the Nancy Greene skiing program for Serwa and her siblings to compensate for the costs of construction.

Serwa won the national championship in the year 2009 at the Canada Olympic Park in Calgary by defeating world champion Ashleigh McIvor. Serwa won her first world cup event in January of 2009. Serwa also won her first outright world cup race later that season at Lake Placid on January 24, 2010. At the 2010 Winter X Games just two weeks before the Olympics, Serwa had managed to win a bronze medal at the famous cash event with fellow countrywoman Ashleigh McIvor finishing second. Serwa was a member of the Canadian Olympic Ski Cross team that took part in Vancouver in her home province of British Columbia. Serwa's bronze medal at the Winter X Games and third overall ranking on the world cup aligned her in as a medal favorite at the Olympics in Vancouver. She proceeded to the semi-finals, but finished at the third place in her heat and could not make it to the medal final. During the next season Serwa won the gold medal at the X Games with a dramatic finish. She flew 150 feet in the air and crashed out badly injured, but the also the champion. Serwa carried her X Games winning momentum into the 2011 World Championships. There she qualified as the fourth fastest skier; Serwa then went on to finish first in the final ahead of teammate Julia Murray. On February 21, 2014 in Sochi, Serwa won silver medal in women's ski cross during her second Olympics, finishing behind gold medalist and Canadian teammate Marielle Thompson. Serwa suffered a training accident in December of 2016 and considered retirement from ski cross, but ultimately returned to the sport following knee surgery. She later earned a place on Canada's ski cross team for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Serwa went on to win the gold medal in women's ski cross.
