Who is Wu Dajing?

Wu Dajing is a Chinese athlete who was born on July 24, 1994. He competes in short track speed skating. He won a silver medal in the Men's 500 m at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, and also a bronze medal in the Men's 5000 m relay. He claimed a gold medal in the Men's 500 m at the 2014 ISU World Championships in Montreal, Canada. At the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, he claimed a gold medal in the Men's 500 m, and also managed to set an Olympic record and two world records in quarterfinal and final. He managed to lead wire-to-wire in all three contests and captured the gold medal. Dajing was only the second person in history to have skated the discipline in under 40 seconds, after American J. R. Celski. Wu Dajing also won a silver medal with his team-mates in the men's 5000 m team relay. Wu Dajing was also China's flag bearer at the parade of nations at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Asian Winter Games. Dajing loves to play basketball in his spare time. He studied at the Beijing Sport University, People's Republic of China and he's fluent in Mandarin. Dajing trained under coach Li Yan who is a national level coach. He injured his knee during the 2015/16 season. Dajing was inducted into the National team in 2010. He began training in 2002 in Jiamusi, People's Republic of China. He was inspired to take up the sport after watching and being influenced by the Chinese short track skaters Li Jiajun and Yang Yang. Dajing regards his memorable achievement when he won silver medal in the 500 m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The US swimmer Michael Phelps is his hero. He was influenced by his first coach Li Yan and trains with the philosophy, "I believe that as long as I work hard, I will succeed." He was flag bearer for the People's Republic of China at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan. In 2014 he was presented with the May 4th Youth Medal. The award is the highest honour for young people in the People's Republic of China. In 2014 he received a Merit Citation Class One from the Jilin provincial government in the People's Republic of China. The award was in recognition of his performance at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. He became the first Chinese male athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in short track speed skating by claiming victory in the 500 m at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. His teammates were Shi Jingnan and Han Tianyu. Together with Han Tianyu and Shi Jingnan, Wu Dajing has done their country proud this year.
