He has landed roles in both film and on television with his first role being that of a character in 'Pandora's Box,' which is a 2009 film and an adaptation by Osamu Dazai that goes by the same name. Back in 2011, Sometani received an award, the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Actor in honor of his performances. The event where he received the award was the Venice Film Festival and it was for his role as Himizu alongside his co-star Fumi Nikaido. He has also appeared in 'Tokyo Park' which was directed by Shinji Aoyama, 'Millennial Chapter' by Koji Wakamatsu and 'Isn’t Anyone Alive' by Gakuryu Ishii. Sometani has also starred in movies like 'Parasyte: Part 1,' 'Himizu,' 'The Virgin Psychics,' and 'Kabukicho Love Hotel.'

The initial announcement of the television show came in November 2016, and fifteen months later, the official website of the comedy announced that it cast Shota Sometani as Buddha. The 'Saint Oniisan/Saint Young Men' will be a comedy series based upon an adaptation to Hikaru Nakamura’s book. The author talked about Sometani saying that that he was excited to be working with the actor and that he was looking forward to seeing Sometani’s archaic smile. The live-action project will be produced by 34-year-old Takayuki Yamada who was a cast in 'Yusha Yoshihiko' series and Yuichi Fukuda who is also the writer. Fukuda said that he dreamed about a live adaptation of the book since it was released and that he almost gave up the project due to issues he felt were beyond his control. It was at that point in his life that Yamada-San invited him to join the project and he realized that his dream had just come true. He applauded the timing even though it was a little bit surprising and he vowed to do his best and relax while working on the television series. It was also confirmed that the drama would be available through a brand new streaming service that will be launched close to the end of the year, and fans of Sometani, will get the opportunity to watch their favorite actor on television. The series stars Shota Sometani as Buddha and Kenichi Matsuyama as Jesus Christ living in an apartment in Tokyo in modern times. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s monthly mag, 'Morning Two' since 2007 and there have been 14 volumes so far. Previously, there were two OAD episodes which were bundled with the special editions of the eighth volume and the ninth one as well. Afterward, a 90-minute anime feature film of it was released and all of them were eventually animated by A-1 Pictures. Hopefully, the Japanese audience won’t have to wait long for the much anticipated show.
